Found a clever SKS gas regulator mod on another board by a member named "destrux". He indicates that an opening of only about 5% the area of the present gas bleed hole still allows the piston to actuate properly. This mod was done to make cycling less violent and possibly improve accuracy. Any one done something similar? What results have you had? Goldenbb.

If I had more time and a better mill I could mill a flat onto the gas block, drill a small hole for a detent pin and make it adjustable with a bullet tip like the fancy $2,000 rifles have. I'm happy using a wrench.

this is pretty cool btw ( i forgot to say so earlier. only thing i think i would change would be to make it a slot head so a tool to adjust it in the bush is a little easier to track down. or bettter yet drill into the head for the little rod in the cleaning kit to fit into.
 
Not to poo poo on an interesting bubba project but I can't see how accuracy can be effected as by the time the gas is pressured up enough to move the piston the bullet has left the barrel.

Also I'm pretty sure the Soviets did some damn fine R&D around what works and what doesn't with this rifle design which was already in active service for several years in the form of the PTRS 41 anti tank rifle.

The rifle is designed to be robust and used in extreme conditions with variety of so-so ammo and still cycle properly. This leads to, lets call it "vigorous" cycling of the action. Not necessary in most cases.

the SVT-40 has an adjustable gas block....why is it okay for that rifle to have it but not the SKS?

the why would be the ability to not throw brass all over the place when shooting somewhere where you dont want to make a mess, or want the brass to reload (i dont know if people reload x39) and still be able to open it up and have all the reliability
