Anyone making their own windicator?

Googling seems to suggest two general ideas.

1) put some powder in a small squeeze bottle (flour baking soda and corn starch are all suggested)

2)put cotton balls in a pill bottle, and pull little bits of cotton through a hole you drilled (both cotton and pill bottle can be replaced with similar objects)

So, anyone using any of these? What's good?

For sailing I have used the wind mirage.

Turn your head from side to side and see where the sound of the wind changes on each side. Half way between is the wind direction (assuming you have a reasonably symmetrical head).

If it isn’t strong enough to hear, you get out the oars, but this works even for relatively soft wind.

It’s hands free, and always in reach.

I’ve never had the pleasure of hunting in a climate where I COULDN’T see my breath, and determine wind direction that way.

go grab some milk weed pods. Dry them and they are about the best solution out there. Just let a few of the seeds go into the wind stream and watch. Its amazing to see how much wind actually swirls, lifts, drops etc.

Where does one get milk weed pods? I heard mention of them a bunch when I Googled this stuff last night, but I can't say I've ever seen them in the wild. Perhaps they don't grow on the west coast?

Go check out some bow hunter web sites.
Those guys use talcum powder and a few other things.
Seen guys use the talcum powder on ewe toon videos as well.
Then again smokers have a natural test for wind direction...and we all know smokers who cut tags year in and year out before it gets scoffed at.....
Get any more moose scouting trips in this fall before the opening day of the LEH?

Nope. LEH opens on Wednesday, and I'm all booked up studying for my calculus midterm between now and then. We'll be heading out on Friday. Just trying to get the last little pieces figured out and this seems like something that would be useful to have.

Corn starch in an old windicator bottle works great and you can see the cloud of powder plenty long enough to determine what the wind is doing. Thread, milk weed, cotton, etc are useless when you're hunting in the rain.

Cattail seeds. I try to find a small seed head that didn't get to full size. I keep a small pocket in my fanny pack full. We have lots of cattail sloughs, in our area so it is a handy, cheap, effective way of determining the wind direction.
