Winter projects I thought I'd post along to share both successes and failures.

Start with Rust Bluing - general description below REQUIRES LOTS OF SAFETY INFO BEFORE ATTEMPTING. REQUIRES CONTROLLED CONDITIONS WITH VENTILATION DO NOT USE INFO BELOW AS A PROCEDURE DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!

I made my own sol'n based on Ferric Chloride. Basically dissolve as much steel wool in 450 ml hydrochloric acid as you can (buy as hardware store muriatic). Add 500 ml 3% hydrogen peroxide and you get a liter of ferric chloride. I took 50 ml of that solution mixed it with 250ml of denatured alcohol and 200ml of rain water or distilled water. Looks like this. Remember to label well and store in a safe location. I literally have enough to last my lifetime now.

I used the video and thread below as reference I added about 5 pads of steel wool until it stopped dissolving. It gases off big time don't do indoors. The ALR thread does not use hydrogen peroxide. Read elsewhere oxygen in the air will convert ferrous to ferric. I used peroxide but accounted for my concentration being about 1/2

I blued a takeoff 700 bbl with almost no surface prep other then removing old finish. I did 3 x 24hr rust periods to get the color below.

Nickel Plating

I got my nickel in today after getting some nickel coated steel that ruined my first batch. Making my nickel acetate at 4v. I will be plating a steel part on my Marlin 45/70 sbl. I will also do the trigger on the model 37 project

Hot Bluing - This will be a caustic, stump remover solution. This is my wife's gun given to her by her mother. I'm restoring as a Xmas gift.

Extensive pitting was found after I removed the Bluing. This will require very careful filing and sanding to repair.

Below is an example of removing some of the pitting

I'll still need to remove the file marks and blend in

So did you just remove the old finish, then soak the barrel for 24 hrs x3? Between soaks, did you buff with steel wool?
Nicely done, good finish.

I've done the caustic hot blueing before at home, that works quite well. I keep meaning to try rust bluing, maybe this winter ill get to it. ill used the info you have provided and also research on my own to do it as well

nice job though that barrel looks awesome
