Homemade Brass Tumbler

Brass Tumbler

I purchased a Cabelas tumbler off of their site for 50 USD. It included the media and polishing compound and filter basket..... Works like a dream...

Would a rotary one work just as good(like a rock tumbler)

Yep, I've got one from Thumler's, works great! Its half filled with walnut media, I do about 400, 45ACP or 100 .338LM at a time. Takes about 4 hrs to do a batch. Surprisingly quiet. I expect the tumbler would handle larger batches, but these are the largest I've done.

I built one of these out of bits and pieces. Total cost about three bucks.
It works just as nice as the comercial ones.
It helps to bolt an upside down funnel in the middle of the brass vibrating bowl. It works a great deal faster then.

I am impatient with slow polishing progress so I picked up a 1.25 cubic foot cement mixer from Harbor Freight for 99 USF and I just picked up some baler belting from Peavey Mart to line the inside. I should have it put together by the weekend. I will be able to polish more than a dozen 50 bmg shells at a time now.

I have plans in making a large one in the fastion of a rock tumbler. Biggest problem we have so far is finding a slow enough 120v engine.

its not the speed of the motor...it will be the reduction gears or pullies you use to slow the motor;)
