Please share your ideas for what you use for homemade Goose Field Decoys. Currently we use 1/4" wood painted like a goose with thin steel bars clamped to them to stick into the ground.

I'm looking for a better decoy. Also for a better method to stand them up than these metal stakes and clamps.

If I can get some pics hosted somewhere, I'll post an example.

Thanks
Dave

I have heard of folks cutting a tire in half; the crescent shape supposedly looks like a goose from the air. Never have tried it because it seems too heavy and cumbersome. I have also heard some use styrofoam cutouts ('painted' with a magic marker) they place flat on the ground. Never have tried this either due to the problem of wind. Personally, I would look for some used decoys in the want ads or garage sales if you are attempting to save some cash. Often all they need is a new coat of (flat) paint.

Use old pails - like 5 gallon oil pails. Dad made piles of decoys back in the day when he could get his hands on metal ones.

Each pail has 2 goose-shaped sections cut out of the side. Glue tarpaper on the metal and paint. Make some heads out of wood and attach some sort of spike to them to put them in the ground.

I've seen folks twist up newspaper into goose silhouettes, tape them in position and secure them with rocks.
I observed field hunters doing this in southeast Manitoba

A friend makes them out off sheet metal and the heads are rivited on so they fold down for transporting. They just stick into the ground or snow, not sure how they would work on frozen ground as he always used them up around Hudson Bay flats? I can not get pictures until I go to camp this fall.

I made 250 goose deeks out of half sonotubes and plywood (neck/head) when I lived in Ottawa. They landed in there like crazy! I'll try to find a pic for you.

I still use slabs of rock and once I've shot down a couple, I'd take the wings and place on the snow/ground.
I'm afraid my decoys aren't working right, or deceptive

This is the best one I had. I kept it big since there isn't really a closeup on the decoys themselves.

They store nicely - we just stack the bodies in a box and put the heads and spikes through an upside-down milk crate in another box. The holes in the crate hold the spikes and keep us from having to untangle them each time we're setting up.

decoys

The absolute cheapest is to cut some pieces of tarpaper into rectangles about the size you want. Make big "staples" out of ocat hanger thickness wire and stick them through the decoys into the ground. Used to work for us.
