Does anyone have any experince with the recent availability of this version. Is there any performance lost due to then beinf built for parades? Are they worth the extra cost?

It is purely for looks. I don't think they are a good investment, also since many are not exactly in pristine condition, buyers beware. Don't buy without personally inspected or clear pictures of all components.

If you want a 'nice' SKS just get a French Tickler from Tenda, before they're all gone. $560 + your taxes. Un-fired and chrome-lined barel like a mirror. They are NIB in Cosmoline so plan on a bit of cleaning using Varsol, etc. And do it outdoors because both V and C smell nasty - you don't want that even in your garage unless you're into it.

Are all french ticklers unfired? Does anyone have experience of issued sks being unreliable or not able to shoot from being too worn out?

Well, Tenda says 'unfired' so . . . Mine was packed in cosmo and the bore was certainly unfired so I believe them. I've had 2X 1951-Tulas that were surely 'fired' and I had no probs with them firing. I shoot my FT out to 175 yds and get ca 3-4 MOA with the irons altho I can't really see a 6" target at that distance, just aim 'about where it is'. The Tulas did around 6-7MOA tho I didn't shoot that far often. Below is the bore of the FT as received, and the last Tula when I sold it. I didn't buy any of the Chinese "Issued" ones

Excellent post, the Chinese are much better shooters, best of both worlds is a Chinese SKS with a Russian stock, seriously.

.

Well, once the cosmo was gone, mine never saw the wood stock. straight into a tapco and pulled the bayo - that's dangerous !! šŸ˜‰
