I took the hood of my Model 94 because I found it too small, I felt it crowed things. Later when I added a Williams peep sight I put the hood back on out of curiosity, but it messed up the whole sight picture.

I think a hood could be useful with a leaf or semi-buckhorn rear sight if the manufacturers made the hoods bigger. I've had Williams fibre-optic front sights bust on me in the past; a hood would have prevented this from happening.

Do you use a hooded front sight; why or why not?

I've always found a hooded front sight restricts your field of view. A front sight with protective ears is OK though as is found on a number of military weapons....I have an 1894 Marlin in 357 Mag with a Williams peep on it and prefer the front sight blade to be wide open.....

I put a Williams peep and twilight aperture on my 94 and kept the hood. I see no problem with it. I filed down the front bead into a narrow, flat topped post and prefer that type of sight.
