I have been reading a bit about this new round, and i can't wait for it.
If it is anywhere near the accuracy of the .17hmr, and it should be, it will be a great round to try out. Hopefully I will be able to purchase one soon after it comes out, and i like it even better that savage is the one making the rifles for it. Like i said i can't wait, what does everyone else think of it?

Here is a link to where i first read about it

I think it's not new at all, that cartridge has been around since the 1950's in various meaningless dimensional differences. It is accurate, mild mannered, and relatively quiet. A much better round than an HMR and is (not will be, a very established cartridge, Hornady just legitimized it with factory ammo) much more accurate.

Been following this 'introduction' for a week now, eagerly awaiting the annoucement of a platform. I think the rifles they put it in will determine if this project is sucessful or not.

For sure, the CZ527's a given I'm betting, Ruger will be on board for sure given their relationship with Hornady, I'd count on a centerfire 77/17 and hopefully a No.1.

I've also thought about making that little single shot I had behind the seat of my truck this spring a .17 Hornet... I already have a custom reamer, die bodies, and a fast twist liner made for a .25 wildcat based on the Hornet case. Decisions decisions..

I wonder how many of those new rifles will get the K-Hornet treatment.

as i understand it, it is the K-hornet already.

the article i read in rifle listed savage as the only one so far, most likely there model 25 as its already offered in the hornet

I've had a number of .17's, and I've never been impressed with their terminal ballistics; the WMR packs more punch than the HMR, the 204 than the 17 rem, and the 221 FB than the 17 FB. Especially at any real range. I think a .204 Hornet would be more interesting. And bring back the 5mm rimfire :)

Not quite.

They used a 25 degree shoulder. Niedner used a 25 degree shoulder on his 'improved' Hornet, The 'K', uses a 40 degree shoulder (or a 35, depending on who's version, etc), while the Ackley .17 AH looks a little more blown out straight than the Hornady.

A whole bunch of guys made 'close but different' variations on the same theme.

The real benefit of this one, other than off the shelf ammo, is that Hornady has gone to the trouble of pounding the specs through SAAMI, in order that there will be a published set of standards for case size, reloading dies, and chambers. Being a new spec, the chambers will not likley be loose caverns, as are the specs on the Hornet parent cartridge, and several other older cartridges.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this all works out.

Cheers
Trev
