Hornady 223 Brass Defect

Was loading some fresh brass I bought at the LGS and found this. The one on the left has a malformed rim, 0.028" instead of the normal 0.038" the other cartridges measure. Primer protrudes the bottom of the case even fully seated. Not sure what would have happened had it been loaded and fired, but Hornady is premium brass and I would not expect this type of defect. I contacted Hornady and they claim they can't ship replacements to Canada, so off to the LGS and see what they can do for me. Lot number 4131034.

Warranty support will be through the Canadian distributor - Korth group. The LGS may be able to help by contacting their Korth sales rep and facilitating the process.

The reply from Hornady USA is what you'd expect; this is exactly what they have international distributors for. The LGS doesn't warranty goods either, the manufacturers do.

Wow, one piece of brass? I would think it would cost more in gas to drive over to your LGS, (to complain about something they have no control over) than to just chuck it in the trash.

This is exactly right. Just spoke to LGS on the phone. Let's see what Korth does for me.

It isn't right to pay 1$/piece of brass and get this in a brand new bag and have to discard right away. Obviously the easiest thing for me to do would have been to just chuck the brass, not bother posting about it or complaining to anyone, and just buy Lapua next time.

Yes but he is a CDN gun owner and therefore MUST complain loudly to anyone who will listen about the supreme injustice of having been cheated out of ONE dollar by an evil corporation and that if this evil does not prostrate itself on the ground at his feet and beg eternal forgiveness for its unconcionable sin he will be forced to complain some more on an Internet forum.

I have a 243 case that has two extraction rims machined into it. This was such a unique piece of brass that I put it into my collection and I show it off proudly .... rather than winging about it.

My OP was meant to be more informational to others, notice I provided the lot number etc... It is more a QC concern, and expecting brand new parts to be within spec.

I sent a couple emails and calls hoping to get a coupon or something but it's likely reached a dead end. Simple solution: I won't buy Hornady anymore. What brand was your double rim case?

No QC / QA is 100%. One piece out of thousands... Id consider it an anomaly and continue on with my life

One out of hundreds? More like one out of hundreds of millions.

Phhhttt. Seriously? You think the other brands are any different?

I don't know what brand my double rim case is ... it is stuck in a wall mount display and doesn't come out so easily.

The real question is why buy $1 a round brass when you can get loaded Hornady for $1.25, shoot it, and still have the brass left over - fire formed to your chamber to boot. No way I can reload quality .223 for $0.25 a round, I'm running about $.60 component cost, so I figure I'm ahead by buying it loaded rather than buying virgin brass.

Id skip Hornady all together and buy Lapua for the same price....much better brass.

I bought Hornady brass for a 375 Ruger. About 20% of the primer pockets were too shallow and I had to use my primer pocket uniformer. I've hadn't had to do this with regularity on Winchester or Remington or Lapua brass. It might be worth the effort if it was better brass but it is not.

We're talking 223 brass here right?

One piece of 223 brass?

Pull that little string out from betwixt your legs and sell the rest of that brass as the recoil might dislodge your bra strap.
