Was looking at the Hornady site last night and noticed this bullet. Decent BC. Would it be well suited to a factory barell to shoot 600 yards or less for groundhogs and crows? Would a factory savage in a 1 in 9" twist .223 or .22-250 do the trick? Would 1 in 12" work?
Any info would be great. Thanks.

1:9 or Faster for those bullets.
600 yards might be doable for gophers and crows. I have shot a 500ml Pop bottle full of water with 69grn sierra's (1grn heavier) in my .223 and at 500m it simply punches a hole through the bottle and drains it rather than exploding due to hydrostatic pressure like it does at 300m

If you have a 1:8 twist 22-250 you should be good to go at those distances with the extra velocity.

If you want SPLAT, I would suggest the 52/55gr Amax or Vmax. Should get out that far with a 223.

If you want something with a bit more momentum, just use the next heavier Vmax.

A 9 twist is plenty for all of the bullets listed. A savage 9 twist will stabilize a 75gr Amax.

I agree with Mystic on this one. My Savage BTVSS in 223 (1 in 9) does quite well with a 52 gr A-max. For target however, my preferred bullet is a Sierra 69 gr matchking. I haven't tried the Hornady 68's. If you check your owners manual at the back you will find Savage uses a 69 Sierra Matchking bullet in their test ammunition.
52 gr a-max, CCI SR BR primer, 27 gr Varget.
69 Sierra, CCI SR BR primer, 25.8 Varget.

Good hunting.

A savage 9 twist will stabilize a 75gr Amax.

Some will and some won't. I have owned one, that even when pushed to the limit with just about all suitable powders, would not. I've seen lots of others try with both Savages and Remingtons. Some were OK ,some weren't.

My daughter used to shot fullbore, using a 9 twist Savage. Out to 600M she used the 68 Hornady with AA2460. For 8 & 900M she used 70 Bergers with Varget.

Good to know. So far, have owned, shot and been around a variety of savage and Stevens 223's with 9 twist. All seem to stabilize the 75gr Amax just fine.

Maybe twists were a bit slower at one point.

As always, YMMV.
