So my go-to for 22 cal rifles with slow twist barrels has for years been the Sierra 50 grain blitz medium velocity bullets. As everyone is sold out with no end in sight, does anyone who has shot both know how they compare to the Hornady 50 grain SPSX bullets?

Judging by specs alone they look almost interchangeable. I guess I could buy a box to test, but talk is cheap and I'm cheaper.

A 1-10 twist or faster will shred SX's before they make the paper as well there is a velocity ceiling 3500fps I think?

The more I read the more the Hornady bullets sound even more fragile than the Sierra's. Good for the 1 in 14 twist, ok in the 1 in 12 twist but it sounds like nothing faster.

A friend loaded some Hornady SX 50gr in his .220 Swift after pulling the trigger a distinct grey puff was visible at about 40 yards not a mark on the 100 yard paper .

I 50g use them in 223 no issues and one of best fur taking bullets. Also use them in 22-250 loaded around 3500-3600 without any issues again for fur taken

I was in the same boat, always liked the sierra in the Hornet, a little extra weight and still expanded nicely. Had to make the switch to the Hornady, used same load and got same accuaracy and performance.

I`ve shot literally thousands of 50 and 55 SPSXs out of 1:12 .223s with max load of H4895 and Benchmark with great success. 1/4 to 3/8 inch 5 shot groups and launch gophers like crazy. Actually my bullet of choice and they perform way above their price point. I prefer them over the V-Max actually.

I used to shoot them out of my 223's for years for gophers. I used the same load in 1 - 12's and 1 in 14's. 28.0 748 with a Rem 7 1/2 primer. I shot either Sierra Blitx, Hornady SX or Speer TNT depending what was available and the barrel liked. All shot very well. I also used them in a 220 Swift Improved called a Weatherby Rocket. Shot them at 4100 fps. My first lot of Hornady's shot very accurately but the second different lot went poof! All were very capable of shooting 1/2 to 5/8" groups at 100 meters which was my standard for the rifles.

Of all the 22 cal bullets I have shot, the 40vmax is hands down the best. Accurate without a bunch of seating depth variations. Fast. They can be driven at 22/250 speeds and hold together. Violent expansion, rarely exit on coyotes. Cheap at 35$/100. Available most anywhere in quantity. Try them. I’m confident they will work for you.

Yup. good advice Buckmastr. I used to use the Hornady 50 SX in my .222 rifles. Switched to the 40 Hornady Max and the 40 Nosler BT and never went back.

So you figure they will shoot out of a 1-12" twist?

Yes. I shoot them out of 12T 222, 222 RM and a 223. They are spectacular.
