Anyone shoot this stuff?

Hornady .22LR 40gr. LRN 5000rds
$569.99 $489.99

Model Number: 83211
UPC: 10090255832119
Caliber: .22LR
Bullet Weight: 40 Grain
Bullet Style: LRN
Muzzle Velocity: 1070 fps

I'm looking at a possible alternative to cci std vel should it shoot better as elr practice ammo

It is cci std. Loaded for Hornady.
Different box, a H head stamp but the same thing otherwise.
I bought a brick a while ago.

I know (or read?) CCI makes this stuff or Hornady, and I believe that 100%. But I've also read this ^ statement before, and wonder why CCI SV shoots well from my guns and the Hornady simply does not. I bought 2 boxes of 50 first time I saw it, and I believe I still have almost a box and a half left. It's a hard pass for me, and that's too bad. I have a rifle that shoots Hornady SuperPerformance ammo exceptionally well, and I reload with their bullets. Great products, this ammo was the first disappointment.

Hornady doesn't make any rimfire ammo. What is sold under its label is made by CCI and perhaps others. See, for example, this synopsis of the blog of Steve Boelter, author of Rifleman's Guide to Rimfire Ammunition h t t p://www.varminter.com/forums/topic/17739-17hm2-17-mach2-ammunition-comment-by-rrds-steve-boelter/

CCI also makes 17hmr ammo for Hornady, Remington, and Federal.

Due to the packaging it is similar to the CCI SV that is probably manufactured by Federal in Nebraska (IIRC).
That CCI comes in Paper boxes of 50. The CCI SV from Idaho comes in the plastic trays of 100.
The results of the two CCI SV products vary in consistency.
The lot numbers mean nothing except to the manufacturer. Duplicating results is iffy.
My results would show a slight preference to the plastic trays.
The Hornady was worth the the price which was about $20 over the similar CCI SV.
I will burn it through the 10/22 when Speed steel starts again.

That's good to know it's cci std vel. I'm looking for a substitute should ammo shortage occur again. On occasion, I found store shelves a little bare. Hard to beat cci std vel quality for it's price but I may need a substitute to continue to practice.

No imperical source, just my best guess.
If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's probably a duck.

Sure, but .22LRGUY is saying it does not quack like a duck...

I didn't know that CCI was made in two different locations. Interesting.

I thought I still had some Hornady but time precluded looking further.
Previously it performed poorer that CCI SV.
I shot a number of different brands, generally 10 shot groups except for one.
All at 100 yards, slight wind with wind indicators at 25, 50 and 100.
I did not clean when switching brands. The rifle was my Cooper Montana Varminter and it seems to take more than five rounds to start settling.
RWS BBM 2.07
SK Standard+ 2.36
SK FlatNose. 1.04(5) and 1.37 (5) Calculated to 1.66 but I had to move the POA so none ran off the paper.
CCI Green Tag 2.90. This stuff has never impressed
CC! Plastic tray 1.43(6). First two shots were low and right 3.20 (for 8 shots)
" " " 3.75 (10). 1.62 for the final 8 but first shot was high and second one low. Speaks to firing a few fouler when changing brands.
CCI Paper box 3.10
Remington target 1.68. The velocity would be interesting as the should was more like HV. This was some $5/100 ammo from a gun show.
Since the sights had been moved, it was time to resight with Remington Eley Match with a velocity of 1062 all 5 shot groups:

0.99, 0.92, 1.42 and .61. All groups were calculated with a 0.20 bullet diameter.

Conclusion: The best tested ammo that can be had in tested situations regardless of cost is not a matter of life or death . . . it is much more important than that!

Running a similar test with other rifles will probably not happen. Searching for the the missing Hornady might.
