Hey CGN! I bought those hornady 178 bthp and they seem to be uneven at the tip. 90% of the box is like this. Is this normal for *match* bullet? Or is this a bad batch?

Well they do match each other, they just don't match the pretty picture on the box.
You should send that picture to Hornady and see what they've got to say.

happens, you can get a meplat trimmer to uniform them, and even a bullet tipping die point them even better

Absolutely normal for HPBT match bullets esp if they've neen slamming around in the box. At long range >600 yards the differences will start to become noticable in a precision rig with otherwise accurate ammo. Like the previous poster mentioned you can get into meplat uniforming and meplat pointing but really, unless you're competing at 1000 yards or longer just ignore it.

That's not normal. I've bought HPBT bullets from Sierra, Hornady and Berger and not once seen a box with that kind of deformation in so many bullets. The odd slightly ragged meplat, maybe, but not like that.

Hey man. nope. Thats how they all are. same with sierra match kings.

This is why i told ya to measure your OAL off the bullets ogive and not the tip. use a comparer like this http://www.precisionreloading.com/m...t_Code=HNB234&Category_Code=BULL_COMP_INSERTS

If you want your tips to be the same you need a Meplat Trimmer -http://www.bullettipping.com/meplattrimmer_detail.asp However even still, you will need to measure your oal off the ogive.

As well yes a meplat trimmer will tighten the group up but the truth is your fine. We all shoot the same bullets, see the same thing on our bullets... but still shoot great.

that tip is the reason they are hollow points, it is nearly impossible to close the tip any further and have it be consistent, the us army tried to get HPBT match ammo minus the HP and ammo companies found it to be almost impossible
