I purchased a new set of Hornady Custom Grade dies for .45ACP part Number 546554. The seating die does not taper crimp but roll crimps instead causing all sorts of problems. Hornady's response was "buy and additional taper crimp seater die"! Thanks for nothing guys. Purchased a set of RCBS dies and they work just fine. Why would Hornady market a box of dies labelled .45ACP with a "roll" crimp? This is the first and last set of Hornady dies I will ever purchase.

That's funny. I've never had anything but the BEST in customer service from them.

I let a piece of Berdan brass in my Remington headstamps for my 308. Broke the decapper pin in such a way that I couldn't remove the broken stub from the expander ball. In addition, I was having issues seating my 155 Amax bullets in the casings; couldne get them far enough into the casings.

I contacted Hornaday, and explained that it was operator error, not a defect. I also asked if they knew of a solution to seating the bullet. I was expecting to pay for $60 in parts plus shipping when I called.

Hornaday shipped me 6 spare decapper pins, a second expander ball, a spare zip spindle, and a longer seating die. They did it all under warrenty even though I did explain that it was my fault. Got all pieces in 2 weeks, and every issue was resolved.

Hornaday has shown me the finest customer service I've ever experienced with any product. I will continue to support their products as I can always rely on them to back their product up.

Did you notice that Hornady sells two different .45 Auto die sets? They offer a set with the taper die # 546555, you bought the wrong set if you wanted the taper crimp.

This was the only set the dealer had and there is nothing mentioned on the case about type of crimp. Wrongly assumed that 45 ACP should be a taper crimp, RCBS and Lyman dies are taper.
Why would you want a roll crimp on such a case? To have Hornady tell me to use a taper crimp from another set of dies, does nothing to improve their image with me, Type of crimp should be clearly marked on their box of dies.

The only reason I could think of for a roll crimp would be for a revolver, but I'm not sure if some use the case mouth or some use moon clips only, but you are correct that it should be clearly labelled on the box.

Some lead bullets have a crimping groove and some bullets have a cannelure and thus the purpose of a roll crimp.

Yes, if they sell both versions the boxes should be correctly labelled. I have had a few Hornady warranty issues(mostly my fault) and their warranty service has been exemplary. Always sent me the parts, never charged me for anything.

45 ACP requires a taper crimp as they headspace on the case neck, roll crimp creates problems. The die set should have been properly labelled. Hornady is not stepping up to the plate here, basically I have a set of dies that are of no use to me because the box was not properly labelled. I don't mind purchasing the proper die, but they do not seem to be available here, and Hornady did not offer that option.

I would call again, politely explain your situation and ask how it can be rectified. My customer service experience with has always been excellent so perhaps you got the one loser in the customer service dept. They might just send you the correct die. It's worth the toll free call to try.

I did as suggested, no luck they suggested I purchase from one of their US distributors, I explained that I am in Canada, and Midway does not ship to Canada. The they gave me a Canadian Distributor and told me to purchase a new seater die that taper crimps, no response to the incorrect labelling or lack of. I guess I will stick to RCBS in future, much better service from them. So if you happen to be shopping for 45ACP dies, buyer beware when purchasing Hornady.

That's too bad. I really prefer Hornady dies because of the sliding bullet seater and the decapping spindle. In fact I called Hornady a couple years ago to ask how much the updated spindles would cost & they sent them to me no charge.

Luckily taper crimp dies are cheap (I normally just buy Lee taper crimpers)

Wish they had treated you better. For a $15 die they would have kept you as a customer. Not a smart business decision on their part. :(
