Anybody loaded up any Hornady 55 grain spire points for their Savage Axis? How was your accuracy?

I loaded some up, they were terrible. Using IVI brass, Winchester primers and 25 grains of IMR 4064. Also tried 25.2 grains of Hogdson H335. No consistent grouping, out of 5 shots 3 would be flyers, all over the place.

What have you tried previously that did shoot well in the same rifle?
 
Try the hornady 55 grain with 28 grains of WW748. That has been an accurate load in many rifles.

I also wonder what has shot well in your rifle? Are you a new reloader?
 
I doubt that it's the bullet. The Hornady 55gr SP should be capable of sub-MOA accuracy in the right rifle and load. I use this bullet extensively in my AR15 with a 1:9 twist barrel. 25gr of H335 and this bullet shoots around 1 MOA or slightly more if I do my bit. In your Axis, it should shoot even better than that. So, look at other reasons for your poor grouping (bedding, action screws loose, shooting technique, etc.).
 
0.75 to 1MOA average from my rifle. I've had a couple unbelievable (and unrepeatable) 0.5MOA 5rd groups with them too but they definitely aren't the norm. They need to be loaded with the same care and attention as any other bullet you might be trying out. Check distance to lands, settle on your jump, do a full load workup and then fine tune.

Nosler Varmegeddon 55 grain and V-max 55 grain shoot well, sub MOA groups consistently. Hornady Match 52 grain as well. Hornady 55 grain FMJ will shoot 1 to 1.5 MOA. The only reason I have the spire points is that I got 1000 pretty cheap. I will try them in my AR and see how that goes. From the posted comments I've read regarding others experiences I'm guessing that my particular rifle simply just doesn't like the Hornady spire points as others have had good luck with them. I will stick to what works well and simply not ever buy them again.

I should also say I am not new to reloading, been doing it for 30 years.
 
Where did you buy the Hornady 55 grain spire points, I have seen bulk bullets for sale that were seconds or factory defects only good for blasting ammo in a AR15.

And again each bullet will make the barrel vibrate differently, did you make a workup load to see which load gave you the best accuracy.
 
Change your powder. Varget or benchmark, Should get you moa or better. Check to be sure you have a 1-9 barrel.
Your axis should easily spit 55sp's moa... if it doesn't check your scope for loose bases, clean your rifle with some copper solvent. Check the barrel crown.

Did you even work up a load for those two powders or did you just randomly choose a charge weight and tried it? H335 has worked well in a few 223s that I have tried it in but you have to work up a load. Also try a better bullet.
You may also want to check if your barrel is free floating as many of the cheap plastic stocks are a bit warped and flimsy and can apply preasure to points on the barrel.
