Hornady component/ammo shortages

I was chatting with one of Canadas biggest importers of reloading components on Monday, and his suppliers in the USA are telling him that most companies are setting production records, but they are nowhere near catching up on their back orders. According to him, if all of his back orders came in at once, he wouldn't have nearly enough space to store it, or enough money to pay for everything. According to his suppliers, this situation could go on for a considerable time period. Some of us predicted this many months ago, and have a good amount of stock on hand, but those that didn't heed the warnings, are having a tough time finding many components.

It's that "stocking" up by individuals that created the problem and continues to exasperate it. I don't think it took a crystal ball for "some" of you to predict it.

Tried to buy powder at WSS a little over a week ago. Guy at the counter said he had more at home than they had in store. Their last order was supposed to show up months ago and they hadn't received anything yet. Went in with a list of three powders I wanted, they had none of em, we had to break out a loading manual to find something that would work in my 40 S&W.

I've been expecting this and have moved away from using any Hornady components. As for powder, I haven't had too much trouble getting what I need, a couple weeks wait at the most.

I didn't run out and buy more than normal when this was predicted. I have bought bullets by the 500 or 1000, powder in 5 to 8lb batches, brass 200 to 300 at a time, and primers 5000 at a time, for many years. This isn't only to maintain my stock, but to avoid changing lot numbers of components on a regular basis. When my stock gets lower than I like, I top it up to my normal level, when the opportunity arises.

However, if you buy powder by the pound, and primers by the 100, and bullets 50 or 100 at a time, and keep very little on hand, you are likely one of the people that will run out.

This situation is definitely not limited to Hornady...it's an across the board problem for components and ammo manufacturers....it was just nice to see Hornady poke a little fun at the situation. I just posted it because I thought it might get a laugh from a few people. I know I chuckled.

I read on another web site, that the police forces are no longer returning brass to the manufacturers. Also, you can request spent brass on your wish list of military surplus that is available to police forces. This is the the list where they can request from the excess lists the military has made available to police forces.

Don't know if it's true, but it's plausible.
