So, here is what I want to do. I want to remove the FMJ bullet from surplus rounds via a inertia Bullet Puller, then replace the powder, and insert a Interlock Soft Point for Deer Hunting....

Can anyone see any potential pitfalls to this? I realize I am going to have to re-sight the gun with a new bullet, but does anyone think there will be excessive pressure or anything un-towards with doing something like this?
 
As long as the bullet weight is the same it will work.I did this with some PMC .223 before........there may be some tar/sealant in the case neck and it's easier to actually seat/bump the FMJ's down a hair to break the seal before pulling..........Harold
 
I'd compare bullet dia's, as a precaution. Years ago, I ran into a combination of undersize bullets and thick necked brass. When I went to do the Mexican match thing, the new bullets caused a bind in the chamber neck.
 
I'm no expert, but I think you might want to reduce your powder charge and gradually work your way up again.

For some reason I have a reduction of 10% stuck in my head, but you will want to check with a more knowledgeable source than me.
 
Should work just fine.

First, remove the decapping pin and resize the case. You want a tight neck. Nothing worse than a bullet falling out and dumping powder in the action.

You might dump all the power and re-throw it if you have a powder thrower.

Seat the new bullet to the same OAL as the mil surp ammo.

Check the zero with new ammo. Should be similar.
 
you did not say what kind of gun you are feeding???i have shot lots and lots of these in a russian SKS. i pulled the bullets and put a hornady 150 SST in it's place..make sure you use a lee crimp die..do not use lead tips..they like to fail to feed..the SKS likes pointy bullets.even the hollow points are not a good choice.plastic tip rules..i have used a recoil buffer as well but it is not necessary. primers looked the same as the 123gr factory stuff

There is no reason to reduce the powder charge!! That 10% reduction is what when pulling the 123 and putting in a 150gn. Here is my procedure, similar to what Ganderite suggested. I pull 50 bullets. I take 10 randomly and weigh the powder charge. Avg that and that is the new charge, I then dump the powder from all of them and re-throw it according to the avg (just a little more accurate when they all have the same charge).
As Ganderite also suggested, you may want to resize the case. However, since this is Milsurp, it will be steel and you cannot resize that. Go for a neck resize only!! Or, better yet, simply seat the new bullet and use a Lee crimp die.
You may get somewhat frustrated using the hammer puller, I don't anymore. I have used an RCBS collet puller for years now and broke down last year because of hype and bought a hammer puller. That's $25, I'll never get back. While it may be alright for pulling a few bullets, it sucks a$$ pulling a lot. And since I hunt quite regularly with a X39mm bullet, I pull quite a few. I will say that my next equipment purchase will be one of the Hornady cam lock pullers.

I just googled that, that looks like the deal right there.

This is more for a next year project anyways, I ended up buying some S&B Soft Points today that I will use this year, next year I will reload some of the Surplus stuff, I figure with buying bullets, they should be about .50$ a piece. That is some pretty cheap deer getters!
