I'm trying to make a list of parts I may need for Hornady's AP LnL press. I'm confused about shell plate/holder selection for .45ACP.

According to Hornady's chart, I need Shell plate No.45 & holder No.45. But checking Cabela's, Midsouth Shooters Supply, etc. I see a reference to Plate & Holder No.1.

Can someone using plate No.1 for .45ACP confirm that? TIA.

You need shell plate number 45 for reloading 45APC ammo. Shell plate number 1 I believe is for a number of rifle cartridges including 308Win.

The Hornady Lock n Load has been on the market for almost 10 years. For about eight of those years, Hornady did not make a specific shellplate for the .45 ACP, instead telling people to use #1, which was for the standard rimless rifle head size (.308/30-06/all mausers etc.) which is very, very close to the .45 in size.
Reportedly, the biggest issue with the LNL over those years was the loaded cartridge ejector, and this prompted the introduction of the E-Z-ject system over a year ago. This was found to solve the problems for every cartridge but one: the .45 ACP. So, they came out with a new shellplate, #45, specifically to solve the problems it had with hanging up.

Close. The #45 came out just after the case feeder, because putting shells into the plate worked better with it (inserting by hand was never a problem). The EZJect system came out later.

So, if I don't intend to use the case feeder, the No.1 plate is OK then?

You only need the shell plate, not the shell holder.
I'm totally new to this. I assumed I needed shell holders as well , but I'll take your word for it.

Thank you everyone for helping me learn!

It will work, but the #45 will be future-proof against the day you finally get a case feeder.
LOL, you sound like you already know what I'm still trying to deny. :D

It seems though that #45 is OOS everywhere - I'm only checking US sites for now to get an idea about pricing & availability. Must be the Obama factor - and the free 1000 bullet offer from Hornady that expires today... ;)

Pls. check

OK, could someone please check my shopping list? I'm only going for 45ACP & 9mm Luger at the moment. I'm sure I need to have these:

1. Hornady Lock-N-Load AP Progressive Press
2. Shell plate No.8 (Item No. 392608) - 9mm Luger
3. Shell plate No. 45 (Item No. 392645 ) - 45ACP
4. Hornady Custom Grade New Dimension Nitride 3-Die Set 9mm Luger
5. Hornady Custom Grade New Dimension Nitride 3-Die Set 45 ACP

But I think I also need (should have) these:
6. 45 ACP Taper Crimp Die
7. Powder Cop
8. Lock-N-Load Die Bushings - the press comes with 5 so I think I need another 5 for the 2nd caliber.
9. Lock-N-Load Powder Measure Standard Metering Insert - for the 2nd caliber
10. Sure-Loc Die Locking Ring - for each die, i.e. max. of 10. No idea if I need these, but they look cool.

I haven't even looked into a tumbler, bullet puller, etc.

TIA.

The #45 shellplate was in stock at Natchez when I ordered a couple of weeks ago, but it doesn't show up in the categorized list of shellplates. You have to search for it by product number, then it appears, all by itself.

At least, it appeared for me, and I ordered it, and they told me it shipped. I don't actually have the package yet to confirm or deny.

ETA: I just went and looked again, and they now show out of stock. BUT, the price is now 50 cents lower than what I paid! I want my money back!!

6) yes, crimping separately is the better way.
7) ok, but I would suggest the RCBS Lock-out die instead (it stops the ram from moving by stopping the shell, so a moment of inattention will have no impact).

8) yes. having a few spare is also handy - someday you'll want to mount just a decapper (or some other single die) and you'll have a bushing at hand.
9) you could do this, or you could get the micrometer insert and just spin it when you change calibers. Makes load development easier too.

10) they come with hornady dies but not others. They are the best steel lock-rings on the market - always good to have some kicking around.

Thanks a lot! I just followed your directions & ordered a bunch of things I was unaware of 3 days ago. :D Went with RCBS Lock-out instead of Powder cop & the Pistol Micrometer, as you suggested. Still looking at my options with electronic scale, tumbler vs. ultrasonic cleaner, various gauges, etc. The $$SPENT meter is hovering dangerously close to the $800US mark...

Is Hornady's 350 Gr Electronic Scale any good? I see it listed at $164 but some places sell it for $60, weird.

I'm also drooling at Hornady's Sonic Cleaner but it looks too small for handgun parts - a 'nice to have' feature, IMO.

Thanks a lot!

you're most welcome.

On the scale, I've never used an electronic because of cost, startup time, and because I've already got an RCBS 10-10 (good weight capacity and most importantly, self-storing) which is good enough for most things. Trickling-up to a load, or setting/confirming your powder throw, it's as good as an electronic. Weighing and sorting things like cases, an electronic is faster and requires less concentration.

Hi there! I am planning on the Hornady LnL Ap and also am considering the pistol micrometer insert... ($36.45) when I go to Hornady's site it says "In order to use this insert, you must have the NEW Pistol Rotor and Standard Metering Insert, Item #050128".

Ok so off I go to check that out... the product description is "Pistol Rotor & Metering Assy 1 Each" and the image below tends to make me believe that it is the rotor and above micrometer together ($40.71). It just says "For use in your L-N-L Powder Measure, this pistol rotor features a smaller chamber for more precise metering"

Ok - so if any of you have ordered this in the past... (the LNL I will be orderering at the same time so if the rotor in the newer machines are suitable etc...) please enlighten me...

Do I need:
  1. Just the Pistol Micrometer For New Rotor 1 Each, Item #050129
  2. Just need the NEW Pistol Rotor and Standard Metering Insert, Item #050128
  3. BOTH Items, as the rotor that comes with the new LNL is not suitable?

Thank in advance!

All you need is the micrometer (No.1 on your list), the new LnL comes with both pistol & rifle rotors for the powder measure. I didn't know that - so now I have two pistol rotors. :D

I hope you know where to buy from, and you aren't ordering from Hornady at list price.

Thanks much!! That explains it and makes it quite clear!

Wasn't ordering from Hornady - was looking at midwayusa.com to order the press, Dies, and bullet feeder etc... Just not sure on Shipping (USPS) to Canada etc... also was looking at grafs.com but they look to be a little more complicated with the shipping and I not seen many posts from people with their experiences etc...

HOWEVER both of those vendors are out of stock on the Micrometer LOL - but I am not yet ready so no big deal - if not I can always get the micrometer direct from Hornady.

Midway won't ship to Canada so unless you have a buddy in the US its a no-go. Both Grafs and MidSouth Shooter supply are good and will ship to Canada (Midsouth will need you to fill out a form & fax it to them but that's no biggie). Be prepared to order from more than one place though. BTW, my micrometer came from Sinclair's - everyone else was OOS. Good luck!

Ah! Thanks again for the heads up on Midway - I got some friends in the US but thats just more hassle than I need LOL - easier to deal with the others who ship to Canada.

I guess it's gonna be Grafs, Midsouth, and Sinclair's.....

Much appreciated!!! :D
