Hornady SST .270 130gr

Thanks guys, lots of good info. New Camper I have seen the video showing the ballistic test into wet paper. The bullet penetrated roughly 10 inches, weighed 65gr's and had a good wound track. The same video showed other bullets, corelok etc and they all performed to similar results.
I've used Corelokt bullets with very good results on deer, shoulder bones or just ribs: Also I've only ever recovered one of these bullets, which originally weighed 150gr, and after recovery weighed about 129gr. Anyway, the .277 bullet test I mentioned is on this website but to save my life I can't find it. The same author also tested a couple other calibers over a broad range of bullet types and brands: These threads might interest you if someone was able to find them.

So today I loaded my first batch. Just 15 rounds using the SST's. Imr4064 45.1grs, 2800fps. Winchester Brass and CCI Primers. I'm trying to stay away from max load as I know 99.9% of my shots will be under 300 yrds with most shots happening at 50 to 150 yrds.

Again, thanks for the input guys, much appreciated.

Enjoy!

EDIT: I did find that thread by bcsteve: It's a sticky in the Ammo thread, this test done with .264 bullets with a 6.5X55. http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/162814-**Huge-CGN-264-Bullet-Test-Result**-(lots-of-pics!)

I think you will be ok at those close distances as far as hitting soft tissue, good idea on keeping the velocity down a bit. If you can get those SST's to shoot good for you (won't be a problem at 150) I would purchase the Interbonds and shoot them at game, use the SST's to work up a load (and target shoot) since they are cheaper, then when you have the kinks worked out use the Interbonds as they have the same poi.

I tried that. Sst shoot very very good interbond as well as gmx shoot like crap. No mater what I tried couldn't get interbonds or gmx to shoot

I found the same thing in Hornady Superforamance factory ammo in 30-06. SST was very accurate but the Interbond and GMX disappointing.

Ya for me(and a few other people I know) the interbond it would place 2 shots almost touching then either above beside or below about 2" the other 2 shots almost touching. This would happen every time consistently for every rifle. My m70 30-06 it would place 2 on the bull then the next to 1.5-2" left and one inch lower. My buddies 308 would put 2 on the bull and then 2 2" lower and one inch right.
Gmx for me one group would be just under an inch then the next group could be 4"

That really sucks, I have not had this kind of trouble" yet" with the Interbonds. I need to retract my same poi statement for the two as well. If switching between the two, for me its only a few clicks different really. If I was planning on mostly shooting 300 yards or mostly 50-150, you don't require super accurate placement anyway. But if my groups jumped around like that I would not be happy either, and 1.5-2" off the main group would be drastic at 600+.I will have to do a real good test one day this spring, shoot a SST group, and overlap it with the Interbonds.

any chance you can go back, talk to the gun desk Supervisor and explain how a salesman with such a poor lack of knowledge sold you potentially DANGEROUS product

are you serious?!
"someone in your store sold me bullets! bullets are dangerous! I want to exchange them for less dangerous bullets? lmao.. I would love to hear that conversation.

SST have a polymer tip to aid the expansion of the bullet. They don't explode, they aren't varmint bullets. Used them lots, never had any issues.

For deer? No problem. There isn't a deer around that will survive a well placed 130 grain SST out of a 270. You will find that it makes a mess of the insides though.

Hey mate! Awesome, Someone else uses a Powder Equivilent to the powder I use :)
I use 45gr of 2208, which is same as 4064, Im getting good accuracy an shot a Doe with it complete pass through.

Interestign to see your Velocity! I'd suppose mine is about that too.. 24 inch tube?

I may be better off PMing you another day

Hello WL, my .270 has a 22" barrel. It's a Savage Axis. My 30-06 is a Savage 116 Hunter XP. I've just been getting into rifle hunting the past year and a a half. The reason for using Imr4064 is because it also works for the other two loads I will be developing for the 30-06 in 150gr and 180gr. I don't own a chronograph yet but a friend of mine does and has offered to bring it to the range once I'm ready to test some loads.

I did find that thread by bcsteve: It's a sticky in the Ammo thread, this test done with .264 bullets with a 6.5X55. http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/162814-**Huge-CGN-264-Bullet-Test-Result**-(lots-of-pics!)

Thanks for the link, I found it very interesting to see how different bullets held up.

I see Superman, So were those Loads chrono proofed? or still a guesstimate until your mate meets you at the range ?
Maybe with 2 more inch of barrel I may get up to 2900fps, but then again maybe not... As You, I have a mate with a Chrono who will let me push a few out over it , just havnt got around to it yet.

Im also the same with the 2208, I can reload a couple of Cartridges an that was the motive behind using a slightly faster powder for the .270, I use it for .35whelen also.

From what I can gather, using the 4064/2208 an getting the mild velocity may actually help with standard Cup an Core soft points for closer in work on bigger game, I wont know until I deck one, I shoulda coulda woulda today but really didn't feel like cutting up a deer, an they were at 200m.. maybe next time!

I know the little deer are no worries , I had complete pass through with good sign of expansion from 60m ..

I'l let you know if I get some Velocity readings in the near future!

cheers!
