Was given a couple boxes of Hornady SST, 150 grain in 308 Win today by a buddy of mine.

Never used the bullet type, however looking for any experience anyone has had hunting black bear and deer with this bullet.

Please do not mention 150 grain is too light for black bear and deer, they seem to die just fine in the other bullet types I have used in the past in my .308.

Look forward to your comments and thanks in advance.

I've been playing with SST's in 150, 165, and 180gr. Would work well on deer, but I'd avoid hitting a bear in the shoulder with one I think.

they will expand and make a good sized wound channel. probably wont penetrate super deep, so avoid tough angles and heavy bone

I've taken 2 deer with 180 grain SST's in .308
The first was at 'about' 10-15 yards... very thick bush. The shot was a heart shot. Bullet entered between ribs, exploded half the heart. The bullet fragmented into what I think was 2 large peices. One piece continued out through the other side, the other veered upward exiting top the neck.
The deer looked like it was hit with a tractor trailer in the front half.
The other deer was a neck shot from about 50-70 yards. Bullet size entry, about a 3-4" exit, no bone was hit, just missed the spine. I was impressed with the large exit wound. All were reloads and I cant tell you what the velocities were. Rifle was a rem 760 with 22" barrel. killed deer dead, but so did the crappy tire cheapo 308 ammo I used last season with alot less damage. I used the cheapo factory stuff last year that I got with a rifle deal, not having time to load any ammo and work loads for the new rifle. Last year's shot was at about 75 yards and was also a bang flop.
My thoughts are, for the type of close range bush hunting here in NS the SST is not a good choice. I will only use the SST's again if I know for certain the closest shot I would take would be 100 yards or better to reduce meat damage.

good advice here, If you think the shots will be close you may want to reduce the velocities.

The SST is a long range bullet like the Nosler Ballistic tip but should not be an issue for soft skin game like Deer.

I think you will be fine, if you are worried about losing meat on the front half then you may want rethink using it .
