Hornady's new "Monoflex" ammo for lever guns...

"------ virtually 100% weight retention, and lethal penetration."

Standard, 170 grain 30-30 ammunition has been doing this for 115 years!

Are they that much better than the leverevolution 160 grain bullets they were selling?

I only ask because I just got my 30/30's sighted for the 160 gr version.

I like the idea of a monolithic bullet, which won't break up. GMX in these is pretty much like being loaded with TTSX. From what I read in that article, these performed pretty much flawlessly on the black bears, which are a tad tougher than deer, especially in the thick hide dept.

Ballistically, not much different than the Evolution 160s, although I'm thinking should be a little bit flatter between 150 and 250 yds.

At $37.00 for a box of 20 they can keep them!

Well, even at that price, if one was to use a few to sight in, and recheck zero every yr there after, it's still cheap enough for me to use them and extend the reach of my 94 30-30 to put the meat in the freezer year after year. I suppose there are not the thing for target and or fun shooting, though!

when they get north of the border i could see a higher price

and then who would buy them -- or they might not bring them up here for yearsd:h:

and tested on a 24 in test barrel :(

who has a 24 98.9% of guns I have seen are 20 inch so velocity is less in the shorter barrel

the other % are 16, 18, or very rare 24"

Yep.

'Cept for the part where the 140 is holdin' up at 200 to 250 yds, while the 170 is runnin' outta gas and headin' for the dirt!

Not really. There are figures on paper, that somebody printed out, usually called ballistics, then there is the real world.
I don't think I have ever seen ballistic figures that represented what a normal shooter gets with his normal rifle.
I once chronographed factory 30-06 ammunition that claimed 2700 fps with 180 grain bullets. Over a top of the line chronograph, they were short of getting 2500 fps. Other calibres have been similar in my testing.
I don't know what they are claiming for these 140 grain super bullets you are talking about, but in reallity, in a Marlin or 94, I would guess on the order of 150 fps less than stated.
The old original 170 grain bullet probably is a better killer at the 200 and 250 yards you mention, than is the super bullet. So it drops a little more, hold a bit higher than you may have to with the super bullets.
The old time shooters would put it this way: "Take a coarser bead son, he's out there a far piece."

With my Marlin 336 and 20" barrel, 160 LEs sighted in 3" high at 100 yds hit dead on the money at 200 yds...exactly as per specs.

If the kill zone on a deer is 8" deep, I figure this gives me a maximum point blank range of close to 250 yds.

According to specs provided, and likely all done with 24" barrels which seems to be the standard...

LeverEvolution 140s, velocity/energy...

100 - 2173/1468
200 - 1902/1124
300 - 1653/850

Zero @ 200 yds = 12.40" drop at 300 yds.

Federal Power Shock 170s...

100 - 1894/1354
200 - 1619/990
300 - 1380/719

Zero @ 200 yds = 17.40" drop at 300 yds.

And requires being 4.2" high at 100 yds to achieve that!

Frankly, this ain't even a fair contest! Almost like comparing a .300 Savage to a 30.06.

Bought some today, $34.98/box. If that big whitetail buck walks out of the timber for a look around at last light at maybe 240 yds or so, probably won't mind the few extra bucks I paid, eh?

Here in the East Kootenays when everything else is finished, whitetail is open from Nov. 16 to the 30th.

And by then decent, relatively mature bucks are spookier than a cat hanging around a dog pound!

Odds are just as great that the one opportunity ya might get will be 200 yds or better.

Certainly could use my .300 WM...but the Marlin is just plain fun to hunt with. Up until this new ammo came along, it sat in my safe 'cause I just figured it was too much of a handicap when push came to shove on that one opportunity.

Now it's a different story.

And a 140 gr mono bullet punching through the vitals of a whitetail buck at 200 to 250 yds doing 1600 to 1900 ft/sec plus with over 1000 ft. lbs of whack is going to do the trick, regardless of whether it fully expands.

...and would do so even on an elk.

And, yep, my Marlin is scoped, too...with no apologies, either! Works much better with my aging eyes and glasses, eh?

:)

I paid $28 at Cabelas. Also picked up a box of bullets to reload for around $40 for q50. This will last me a few years.

Figured they'd be about that at one of the big stores.

Be sure to pick up the Hornady Superperformance powder for reloading these. It's what gives this ammo the extra oomph. In fact, it was first developed specifically for LeverEvolution ammo before they expanded it for everything else.

I think I'll stick with the 160s and reload to the max. I am sighted for 100 yards which, were I hunt, is maximum range. The old 340 C savage loves the load and hopefully I will see deer this year and bring him home.
