So I stopped in to see Striker, and talk about guns and such, and notice immediately that there is a remintion 742 action spring within sight. So I ask whats up with it, turns out its a refinishing project he is doing for someone of course, and then I see it close up :eek:
Back when I did gunsmithing I saw some awful autoloaders, but have to admit, this may have been the worst I ever saw. The rust was almost as bad inside the reciver, the bolt head was covered in what can only be called rust-mud, and the chamber wasn't much better. The action bars looked good, as did the spring, but the gas nozzle looks like swiss cheese almost, and the innerds are just plain awful.
Previously the worst I ever worked on was a bear guides BAR, which was about 75% as bad as this, but this just made me wonder why anyone would let it happen.:confused:
 
Probably stored it while it was wet and forgot about it.

Just looks like someone forgot to clean off some mud. Also that spring is surprisingly clean, looks like it was just installed.

That thing is more of a write off than a restoration project.
 
I had a guy bring me one of these Remington semis. He had been Caribou hunting in -40. Put gun in a Kolpin Gun boot, and forgot about it. Several months later he brings me the gun, so rusted that you couldn't pull the bolt back. I soak it in penetrating oil for a few days. Finally I pull the bolt back, and out pops a live 30/06 cartridge.
He had hunted Caribou on snow machine with gun in boot, then put boot with gun in truck and drive 300 miles home. Placed gun in closet in house with 3 children. Then brought it to me. All the while it was loaded, safety off. I was so pissed I cut it in half with a hack saw.
True story.

I have to ask, is that 742 owner of the rifle you hacksawed an alcoholic or on drugs?
I can not think of any excuse for doing what he did unless he is a complete loser!

I restored a Cooey 600 that was in worse shape.

Lots of work. It was more of a learning experience than anything. The gun was given to me by a friend and it was rusted solid and the stock had lond deep gouges in it. After a few days soaking in wd40 I pryed the action open and dismantled the rifle. Removed the rust and sanded the stock. I used Varathane to coat the bare wood after I sanded it smoth and filled the gaps. I then removed the rsut and blued the metal.

I learned how to shoot with that gun, great gun. It is in my cabinet now and probably will be for a while. Last time I took it out it got dropped and the stock cracked straight down the middle. I epoxied it together so it is pretty solid but I don't want to risk further damage so it is a safe queen now.

I should post a pic of my SKS that blew up in my face (no injury thankfully). The bolt blew back after the action pin fell out and the bolt stop went straight through the bolt face and flew tiny pieces of metal everywhere. I tried to hammer the bolt out but it is twisted uip and the entire action is ruined.

Cheap Chinese junk/Stupid operator!

Why punish the gun for the owners stupidity?
Same concept as going after us for the actions of criminals.
