Horses + Hunting

I like it, havent' done in a few years but will again.

I like to be able to hear what is going on and you can go for a good while (without pushing it) without having to fuel up (unlike an vehicule). Just let them graze and give them water and you're good to go.

I also find that you can access certain places that you may not in an ATV or by other means. (aside from walking)

The downside is if you end up with a horse that easily spooked or is partial to either wildlife, gunfire , sinking in mud , crossing creeks , etc. It may become very frustrating.

If you have the luxury of owning your own horse and know him well that should not be a problem.

Well, if you get lost, you'll always have fresh meat with you!

Horses don't like dead things. I always like how their eyes pop out when you slap a dead carcas on their backs

Hunting from a horseback is fun, you have an extra set of eyes and ears to help you. Much easier to cross creeks from a horseback, as well as carrying your day pack, gun and your meat around.

It's not for me only because it is a lot of work for me, and my trips are usually quite short.

As for the Newfie on a horse, well that's another story!!! You should see my rubber ridin' boots!:D:D

In all seriousness though, I love to ride. I have trained polo horses for a few years, (of course that is english saddle), done many many a mountain trail excursion riding western, ....

I have jumped, while not very good at it though, and that little spruce meadows place;)

Know many horse guides and lived with one for a few years.

My horse experience is good, but the amount of time for me to do it no longer presents itself.

I like knowing the advatages of being on horseback while hunting though. I always liked camping with horses and it was great company, excellent alarm in the night, and mounted mountain views are excellent.

I have never run into a bear that was grumpy while on horse and always wondered what they would do. I have passed by bears at a distant and the horses didn't care.

I was once ploughing a field with a horse that I presume got stung by a bee. He ran a mile, 1/4 mile to the paved hiway and then straight up the hiway with plough and all attatched!!!! It was scary but damn funny when we saw he wasn't hurt.:D:D

The only way to go. I'm not much of a hunter but pack into the mountains all the time and always carry a rifle to scare bears, etc. The horse can let you know if wildlife is around a long time before you see or hear anything.
I shoot targets off my horses all the time, part of their training. I use ear plugs on them so ears will not be harmed.

I assume these are specially designed ones for the size and shape of a horses ear canal...am I correct?

I wonder if one could get electronic ones for horses?

Shooting off horses is sweet, with the right horse.
I used to ride this one horse "Spook". For absolutely no reason, while tied, he'd freek out!!!! go Crazy!! Eventually stopped hooking his harness and bought a bungee. Would not want s gun to go off within a mile of him.

Ear plugs for horses available at most tack stores if they don't have the little foam balls for pet toys work.
Train your horse before shooting off it's back that way it will prevent accidents. You have to realize the barrel of your rifle usually goes out past their head and the blast is right in the ear.
Put the plugs on a string when you are ready to shoot just drop them in the ears, or if shooting behind or to side not necessary, as long as horse is well trained.
Nothing more relaxing then a horse, a mountain and your trusty .44 mag.
