I am wonderin if any one has found a good load for a 300 rum. I'm trying 210 gr bergers with retumbo. Has anybody has any luck with that combo

180 Nosler Accubonds
94.5gr RE-25
Fed mag rifle primer

26" barrel, chrony'd at average of 3350 fps. Super cleaned barrel gave me .502" at 100m for 3 shots. Avoid 5 shot strings if you want the barrel to last. This load was below the max by a grain of powder. It shot so well I stopped there!

To date that load has dropped everything I shot at. No lost animals and very little tracking ever involved.

Anyone loaded lighter bullets with sucess?

I've had good results with the 165 Nosler Accubond.

96.7gn RL 22
WLRM primer
Rem Brass

3558 fps
Avg group .85"

This is a hot load and may not be safe in your gun.
I've shot 2 deer and a moose with this load, all at close range and the Accubond held together very well judging by the exits, and with the moose one was found under the skin on the off-side.

Lately I've been working with the 200gn Accubond.
So far my best result is with RL 25 but I've not tried Retumbo or H-1000 yet.
US 869 was a big disappointment accuracy wise.
I'm also planning to try non-magnum primers to see what happens.

87.5gn RL 25
WLRM primer
Rem Brass

3145 fps
Groups so far are about .9" and I'd like to do better.

This is also a hot load that should be approached with caution. I've shot a moose with it, again at close range. Perfect bullet performance.

The rifle is a Rem Sendero SFII with a 26" Barrel.
It's kind of funny, I've only ever shot game with it at 30-30 range....

I'm looking forward to a custom barrel when this one is done. I'm a big fan of this cartridge.

I'll also add that it would be nice to have a source of decent brass. The Rem brass is poor.

I've seen Nosler made brass for the 300 RUM but it was nearly double the cost of the Rem made brass. And it's funny that 30-30 range was mentioned. Since I started hunting with the big 300 my longest shot has been 257 lasered yards! I still practice out to 600 yards. My 180 grain load mentioned earlier is so bang on to the stadia marks in my 3.5-10x50 Leopold Boone & Crockett it's scary. Zero at 300 yards and the rest are within an inch or two all the way to 600 yards. Very handy.

i use 91gr of rl25 behind a 180 accubond and federal 215 primers.
Shot out to 1480yards accuratly. rifle is also a Sendero SF11. Average speed of 3165fps. funny how you were saying that all your animals were taken within the 30-30 range. i also cranked a moose this year at 88 yards. Shot between the eyes. lifted him right off his feet and flipped him on his back.

I was considering going to a lighter bullet than 180gr thinking it might be better. So I started plugging in data to a basllistic program. Much to my surprise the 180gr was optimum! The lighter bullets had far faster muzzle velocities but once the distance got to 300 yards and beyond the higher BC of the 180's took over and everything was better for the 180gr. The 180gr had superior velocity remaining, higher energy and a flatter trajectory. And since my load is matched perfectly to the range stadia in my scope I decided not to change.

300RUM is my favorite round.

I found with my ballistics program that with the Accubonds the 165 was superior to the 180 and 200 in everything but energy (and recoil!) but the difference was only a bit over 2 inches at 600 yards in both trajectory and windage (10mph, full value). I haven't done load development with the 180's yet but I was using a velocity for the 180 of 3300 or so if I recall.

I haven't actually shot it at long range yet either. Actuality may differ from the graph on the computer screen...

The trajectory for all 3 was very similar so I think I'll just determine which one shoots the best and use it. I too found that the Boone and Crocket reticle matches up nicely, at least according to the projected trajectory. I have the 4.5-14x40.

I worry about 165's at over 3500 fps shortening an already short barrel life though. I used to worry about close range shots and bullet failure too but I no longer do at all with the Accubond.

The bullet in the pictures above penetrated both shoulders of a moose shot at only 30 yards and was found under the hide. With an MV of over 3500 that's a pretty extreme test for a bullet and that one passed the test.
