Just wondering if you can overheat a shotgun barrel? Friends and were out for some informal trap shooting 2 weeks ago. It was about 32 degrees out under full sun. After about 8-10 shots the barrels were very hot.
I'm pretty new to all this so I'm not sure if there is potential to do damage. My shot gun is a new to me 77 Browning Citori. I want to take good care of it!

And if you think shooting smokeless will get barrels hot, try shooting a round of Trap with Black Powder.
Not problems for the gun with that either, other than the cleaning job that is required.

Try shooting a round of sporting clays with a Splinter fore end SxS on a hot day, and you will learn all about hot barrels.:)
A round of five stand is even worse. Always good to have a thick leather glove in your shooting bag when taking out the sxs no matter what time of year.

I doubt shooting a scatter gun in 32 degree weather will do your gun any harm.
But, if it makes you fell better when your missing the easy shots you can blame it on the hot weather, the hot barrel and it shifting the point of ''Impact''
on those pesky easy missed ones.

The high density polyethylene used in shotgun shells and gun stocks will melt around 300 - 350F, wood will start to char about the same temperature.
This is below the temperature that would effect the barrel steel.

So if the fore end isn't smoking or melting and the empty shells aren't melted the steel will be ok.

I have been told by competent sources that you can overheat a shotgun barrel which is where Berettas A400 with the built in gunpod would come in handy. There is an ipod type device built into the pustol grip of the gun that keeps a count of every round fired through the gun and according to a fellow at our club who shoots one it tracks barrel temperature and gives a warning when you need to allow the barrel to cool. It also has some other features. I am sure other manufacturers will be bringing out that technology soon as well.

From the Beretta website:

GunPod: The Beretta onboard computer
The Beretta GunPod is a multifunction electronic device, a standard component which is housed in the pistol grip cap of the A400 Xplor Action and allows the user to:
count the total shots (not resettable)
count the partial shots (up to 7 resettable sessions)
measure the external temperature in Centigrade and Fahrenheit (thermometer)
test the ammunition fired.

GunPod allows you to compare two different types of cartridges, even when their load is equal.
The Beretta GunPod is a revolutionary device in as much as it counts the shots fired even without a battery inside or with a discharged battery.

Literally thousands have shot many rounds through their guns, expensive & not so, at places like Vandalia, Sparta & San Antonio on many days hotter than 32 C
without any ill effect.

A few "hot barrel" dove hunts in Argentina might help convince you it's alright. Never seen a melt-down yet.

Some of the Olympic Trap competitors at Atlanta were running cold-water from a tap down their barrels at the end of each "line" ... mainly to stop
the heat wave distortion (blurred targets) when looking over the their well-heated-up vent ribs !

You'll burn your hand long before you hurt the gun. I have some old sxs with splinter for ends and I don't wear gloves. Make the mistake of shooting a 250 round of trap tournament with one of those once you will never forget
