Hot brass from my norc m14

The brass from my m14 comes out pretty hot, unlike my .308 bolt action. Is this normal?
I'm shoting a real light load with a 150 fmj and Rel 15 just over minimium load.The case density is still 85% + so I don't think I am underloaded either.
Does your brass come out hot?
 
its pretty hot, i have a few burn marks on my right arm as I shoot left handed and some casings eject directly on my arm.
Also noticed the same thing but then again when I shoot my bolt gun, I just take more time taking the case out...
 
In a bolt gun the surrounding metal of the chamber has time to cool the brass. In an autoloader, as it ejects immediately, the brass has no time to cool down to the temperature of the chamber of the barrel. I notice on my AR-15, even the first round ejected is hot enough to not want down the front of your shirt. Even 10-22's eject brass hot enough to burn you.
 
It's normal. Average headspace of Norc M14 is around +10, the brass gets stretched more then in a bolt gun and that alone creates extra heat.

It's actually part of the design for most auto loaders, and especially for the ones that were military in origin. Hot ejected brass means the heat isn't transfering into the reciever where there's a possibility of cookoff, a very real possibility for the volume of ammo that military users shoot.
 
I recollect the odd spent casing landing down the shirt collar of the guy next you at the FN range. Made for some very interesting language and body expression.

Yup... they are hot and they stay hot for a good 2-3 minutes.
 
Its a pain shooting the m14 in the snow, case lands in the snow, melts a bit, refreezes, and when you go to collect your brass you have to chip the ice cube off...all worth it.
 
Cool, I just thought it was odd that the bolt gun does'nt do it.
The gf just helped me size and prime 100 cases, will load them tommorrow.
I love shooting the m14, just don't like haveing to load it all up again(I find it much faster to shoot it off than load!)
 
the hole thing has to do with heat transfer.
there`s huge heat sink that is the metal around the shell in the chamber and the barrel and receiver. in a bolt action, the shell has time to transfer the heat and reach thermal equilibrium by the time you cycle the bolt and eject it. wihle in a semi auto, the case is ejected immediately. air being a poor heat sink, the brass keeps the thermal energy forlong thus stays hot for long
 
There is a trick sorta like licking a flag pole in winter in Ontario... Don't do it..

Gee a case that just had 30-40-50 or more thousand PSI on it with an accelerant like gun powder that burns at hundreds of degrees or more... and the brass is hot... wow...

If it's cold worry...
