So how hot do you load? I am new to the cartridge with a rossi Ranch hand with a full stock. We all talk about how hot hand loads are on par or warmer than 44mag. but how hot is hot, over book max or is book max what is meant by hot?

While we are playing this game share your favorite loads for Bear Defense (obviously) and a 100 yard deer round.

Thanks for the info.

some companies make +p rounds for 45 colt which are only safe in some guns. I have seen 1500 fps 260gr cam pro out of henrys mares legs.

LYMAN #50 has a section on hot loads meant for Ruger and contender pistols. I won't load them due to having SAA Colt revolvers and I don't like the possibility of accidentally putting one in my gun and destroying them. I have a 44 mag and 454 Causal so that's where I load to the max. Should be perfectly safe using Lyman data in a Rossi rifle.

HSM bear load plus p 325 gr gas check, certainly wake you up after some cowboy loads.

I'm shooting 13.8gr of Ramshot Silhouette under a 255gr hardcast RNFP from a Lee mold out of my full stocked RH. 29,850 psi and 1322fps out of a 7.26 in revolver is what the data sheet says. My Chrony says 1880fps out of the RH, so easily equal to a +P 44 Mag.

There are much better powders out there, Accurate 9 and 4100 are just a couple. The RS is just what Del had in stock when I wanted to start loading for the RH. I put down a badly injured doe last winter at about 50yds and it was DRT with a full pass through.

I also got a coyote on a passing shot at about 60yds, it looked spectacular, just a large explosion of hair and the coyote tumbling along down the hill. I carry the gun mainly for bear defense when I walk the dogs at night and hiking during the day

and hopefully will never have to find out how well it works on one but I am sure it would work well.

In an action designed for a 454, loading the 45 to 44 mag pressure is not unheard of.

.454 pressure is attainable, where do you think the Casull came from in the first place?

I load .45 Colt pretty hot, I am using a Ruger SRH Toklat. 27 grns H110 under a Campro 250 FCP bullet. I haven't put them over a chrony yet but they should be doing well over 1400fps. Lots of thump but recoil is not bad.

25gr h110 300gr lee bhn 25-30 ~1400fps 4" barrel
Flattens the pistol primers pretty good in a taurus 454
Its pretty important to use a hard enough alloy or tough enough jacketed bullet

Hot loads for the 45Colt are very much action strength dependent.
Actions like the '92Winchester rifle, and a few others can be loaded quite hot, as can some models of handgun. However, there are tons of firearms out there that would literally be blown to bits by such loads.

Yeah, you guys knew that.
But it had to be said.

Thanks for chiming in, the particular rifle I am asking about is the Rossi range hand, a 92

Hi, I have loaded 26gr of H1110 with regular primers ( not magnum ) under a 250 gr Hornady XTP 1.60 oal and it runs 1600- 1650 fps. Certainly know when you shoot 5-6 rounds. I do mark the bags/box's as RIFLE ONLY as I would sure hate to get them in a revolver. I use them in my Rossi Ranch Hand.

The other thing that none of the load data outfits make any mention of, is magnum primers. I use a large pistol magnum primer with a slow burn powder like H110 or Lil Gun even though the load data calls for a standard large pistol primer. There is a marked difference. I've gone 2.5 grains over max in the load data with those slow burners and have yet to see any signs of overpressure... but my shoulder can't take much more! The kick like something you'll regret once you're shooting them +P+.

Next range trip out, I will likely work up a bit more. 454 Casull is said to have pressures of up to 50,000 CUP. The load data for 45 colt +P loads is up to about 30,000 CUP. In a Rossi 92... they are identical builds so the 45 colt can effectively handle the same pressures as the 454 casull can. It will all boil down to watching the brass. The brass will fail before the gun will.

Edit: I tend to load 250 grain jacketed bullets as they group the best. The Honady XTP hollow point 250 grain bullets don't just drop a wild boar, they knock it over!

I load the same with 250 Campro for my ranch hand.

I was and still am majorly into 45 Colt Linebaugh/Ruger top pressure - velocity loads.

These are the very top pressures/loads that you should push these loads in 45 Colt firearms.

Consecutive Serial # 5.5" barrel Ruger Bisley Vaquero's

24grs H110 300gr WFNGC 1170fps

25grs H110 300gr Hornady XTP 1300fps

25grs H110 330gr Jae-Bok Young 1325fps

Marlin 1894 CB 24" barrel

25grs H110 300gr XTP 1670fps

25grs H110 330gr Jae-Bok Young 1645fps

I’m just wondering if you know what you’re talking about. The .454 is not at all the same as .45lc. Yes it was designed off of it but the cases are very different. You can not load 45lc brass to .454 pressures. I’ve loaded thousands of both. They are not interchangeable. The strength of the action aside. Full power .454 loads shred campro plated bullets as well as Hornady xtp bullets. For full power .454 one must use at least xtpmags for jacketed projectiles or they separate.
