How are the game animals doing in the prairies this winter?

Winter kill will be high in some areas...other areas are doing just fine. In Alberta, the south is actually looking pretty good...the north/central not so much.

Mule deer seem to doing good east of Okotoks. No signs of ectomorph, so far, and still healthy numbers of them. Usually early to mid spring is when winter kill is noted.

Talked with my sister last night and sounds like Edmonton east out to Vegreville the deer are doing OK....but winters not over yet!

I nailed one with my wife's nice new truck about 7 miles north of Raymore, just after the new year. Nothing that $12,000 didn't fix. I won't be having any second thoughts about shooting my share from now on.

Around Medicine Hat the deer numbers are beginning to recover from 3 years back. Still thin though.
The Elk in Suffield? Oh, about 9000 last I'd heard.
My son is a good friend with a F & W officer. Rumor has it F & W dropped a dozen pair of wolves in 'The Block' to attempt to rectify the problem...perhaps creating another. Who knows, it's a rumor right?

I think last winter was worse because more snow made it easier for the coyotes to catch them but this winter has been pretty cold and spring isn't early. The survival rate may be higher this year because winter 2012-13 left fewer competing for the available food. I am hearing some direct reports from rural friends that suggest it is not as bad as it seemed when we saw very few deer of either species even in muzzleloader season 2013, but I still don't think they have started to recover.

South of Saskatoon all the way to Minot the numbers were low in 2013. I see alot of young ones this year. I think the rebound will be substantial this year.

Kjohn, my buddy hit a deer last year with his Tundra, now it sports a nice push bar......lol

That's what I did in 2013, my Toyota Tacoma received a Iron Cross bumper and 8,000 pound winch.

If I was going to get something for the front of the truck id get an ali arc. Its aluminium so it doesn't weight 500 lbs and really strong. See lots of semis with em on.

Nice! I have noticed less mule deer this last hunting season and white tail seem to be holding steady. The moose however are doubling every year it seems. I was out on the sled and found an moose honey hole on one of our quarters of land, there is moose ####/piss/hair absolutely everywhere. They seem to be taking shelter in an abandoned yard.
