Hey guys,
got this rifle in a trade and im really disapointed. Ive asked my item and money back, but just out of curriosity, how bad is it? salvageable?

Anyways, here are the pics. As you can see, the bore shows rust. Hard to clearly see in the pics but the rusty fuzz goes from the crown all the way to the chamber. Might look like copper fowlings, but no, it,s indeed rust. Also, the inside of the gas piston and the connecting part on the barrel shows rust. Even some light rust on the piston even though its hard to tell from the pic. The piston was stuck in the piston chamber and I had to onlodge it by pushing it out.

thanks.

just give et a good clean, clean the #### out of the barrel with a copper brush, Maybe you can stick the end of it in a cordless drill and run it up and down.

You think that would take care of it? Will rust reapper even if I take care of it properly after shooting it? (hot water, hoppes, oil).

I'd be ticked if I felt like the seller kept that detail from me!
If I were to keep it, I'd apply lots of oil and very light rubbing with uberfine steel wool to the piston tube and piston. The bore? I'd use oil and a good bronze brush. If you haven't already done so, disassemble the bolt and inspect the firing pin and channel to ensure they're clean and crud-free. Once everything is cleaned up, I'd expect the rifle would function fine. After shooting, I'd clean promptly and make sure everything had a coat of oil or Frog Lube. Time to enjoy the beauty!

Everything but the barrel looks to be easily cleaned up. Can't tell from the pics how truly bad the barrel is, but a serious cleaning might make it reasonable. Not perfect, but shootable. If this rifle was advertised as being in non-rusty condition I would simply return it rather than do anything to clean it up. I can't imagine sending someone a rifle in that condition without disclosing it beforehand, that is inexcusable.

Yeah, ive asked for pics and I did get pics of the internals. Everything else is rust free. But im surely ticked off. I wasnt expecting a new rifle of course, but atleast a rust free one. Its worht 200$ in our trade...

From my cell phone screen that rust looks very minor. Clean it up as best you can and go at it. These guns can take obscene amounts of abuse.

Having said that the seller did you wrong by nor disclosing these issues. There should have been a discount for that. I would say he owes you some cash back.

in the meantime maybe separate the metal from the stock and just dip it in diesel. Some guys will tell you not to do this or that but I have done it all with no ill effects especially diesel, some old man told me that trick and it works. As far as rust reappering its hard to say but just keep it oiled good and in a dry place. Every couple months I just squirt mine with wd40

I think the piston and all the other stuff will clean pretty good, The barrel should be chrome lined and that too should come back without a lot of trouble
Follow the above mentioned procedures and I think you will find its not as bad as it looks.
Ive cleaned up some pretty nasty looking guns in the past and surprised myself at how well they cleaned up.

Not a problem; the rifle is likely 'fine', if there's no issue other than rust. Clean her up and go! Seriously, it's just rust! I've seen worse.

Regards whether this condition was disclosed; it should have been. I'd be ticked! unless this was part of the deal...

Have a good inspection, clean, oil and go shooting. Try not to let it happen in the future, seems to me once rusted, rust comes back.

This is why I ticked. The fact that it wasnt mentionned and the fact that ill always have that rust reapearring in the back of the head. if it was my fault , id live with it, but since this is a newly aquired rifle to me, its a pain.

You should get some cash back for that condition.

+1 SKS are tough! clean the crap out of it and oil, get bullets downrange.......

Clean/scrub the #### out of it, use a drill with a brass brush and then cap the ends and fill it with Fluid film and let it impregnate the metal pores for a day or so to help slow the corrosion that will forever slowly continue.

The fluid film will neutralize any salts ect. imbedded in the rust pores.

In agreement with the previous comments..ie clean it keep it oiled and it will be fine.
But the price seems a bit high for one in that condition. (I got a new unissued unrefurbished Russian one two months ago for $215)

After seeing the pics...well that's not minor detail. Rust on a firearm is a big deal. You can clearly see it looking down. You're going to need a lot of elbow grease to get that out and to keep it out.

I'd be more concerned about the rust in the gas tube. If you remove too much surface metal trying to clean the rust out, you may have gas bleed past the piston when you shoot it, giving you a nice single shot SKS. I'd return it and demand my money back if I was you....
