How can I tell if my SKS has a chrome barrel?

I have had 2 different people look at my SKS. One is sure I have a chrome barrel, the other is certain that I do not. The guy who is sure said that because the outside of the muzzle is silver (instead of blued) it must be chromed. The other guy said he thought that it was just polished and the barrel was not chrome lined. Is there some other test or way to identify this?

What make and year is your SKS?

It's pretty easy to tell by removing the bolt , holding the barrel up to the light and looking down it. It's REAL shiney

USSR made - chrome
Chinese - probably chrome (usually chromed, but they could made some without or with totally crappy quality)
Yugo - no chrome
Albanian - ???
Romanian - ???

all SKS has chrome bore except yugo and russian made 1949-part 1951.

you can do the cold blue test .

Take some gun blue on a q tip and rub inside barrel. If it blues, it isn't chrome.

Its most likely not cromed since its a "1950"

I maybe wrong, but I dont think you can chrome a non crome barrel. Since the layer of chrome will make your bore tighter.

My 1950 is not chromed. Why do you want to chrome it? There are some people who say a none chromed barrel is more accurate, though I have never seen proof of that, but I did read it on the internet so it Must be true.

Because... chromed barrels just put a smile on your face. It's like having a stainless barrel... only not.


Plus, it also helps with the corrosive 7.62x39 ammo that's out there for real cheap!

The best solution is to own more then one.

I own 2 norcs one russian and I'm thinking of getting another russian. The norcs don't get the attention my russian sks does. I should sell one but naahh

even if you could find someone to chrome your SKS barrel, it would be a lot cheaper just to buy an SKS that already had a chromed barrel

The Chinese have a totally chromed honor guard SKS. There is a nice pic of one on Yooper's website... pretty shiny! The Russians just used regular SKS rifles, the Poles used Russian SKS rifles in Polish laminated wood stocks, not sure about other countries.
