How clean is too clean?

Pushing a cleaning rod down the bore without a good bore guide can do more damage to a rifle than shooting it.

A totally cleaned bore will require several fouling shots to get the rifle firing consistantly.

Many guys won't clean the bore until accuracy starts to fall off or there is a threat of corrosion. Crap in the action, receiver on the otherhand can effect the functioning of the rifle.

Cleaning, if done CAREFULLY won't hurt; continuous disassembly and recklessness with a cleaning rod can cause more damage than many thousands of rounds would ever do.

Fire one round through a cleaned gun, and its not really clean anymore, a couple of boxes and its 'dirty'; at what point is it too dirty..........well you be the judge. The only imperative is a defence or combat machine where ones life is dependant upon functional reliability..........then frequent cleaning makes for sensible life insurance.

Modern non-corrosive priming and smokeless powder residue forms an excellent moisture barrier, some of my low usage arms have NOT been cleaned (after firing) for over a decade with NO ill effects.

If , after cleaning, a number of rounds have to be fired to get the accuracy back to where it should be, then that is too clean.
Clean the bore only ennough to bring back the accuracy, but not sofar as to go "the othe rway"

As far as the rest of the rifle - action, trigger, etc.) that should be cleaned regularly, and re-oiled or left dry , whichever it warrants....
