How come we can't get milspec 5.56 ammo? I have never seen any here

I saw some in Maine, but I forget the price. It was cheap because it was stuff that had defects or something???

The US isn't allowing 'military' 5.56 ammo export permits, but there are no restrictions on 'civilian' .223 Remington.

For example, Winchester White Box 3131 5.56 NAY, Winchester White Box .223R1/R2/R3 YEA.

Nothing stopping an importer from bringing in a container load from elsewhere, but most of our ammo does come from the states in one way or another. And nowadays, that means no 5.56 ammo.

The winchester white box I use to buy had NATO headstamps. Other then that, there is south african 55g ball around, and some IVI SS109 equivalent.

Are there any ammo manufacturers in Canada?
The stupid war on terror is drying up supplies of regular .223!

I would think there would be at least one ammo factory in Canada. How does the Canadian army get their 5.56?

IVI makes Cdn forces ammo and they dropped their civvie Imperial line a few years back. I don't think there is anyone else making large quantanties of rifle ammo here anymore.

Why did they do it? Political correctness or political pressure?
Seems like another tool to choke the Canadian gun owner.

Simple - money. There is more money to be made in the defence world than in the civilian one. The Valcartier plant is well known for production of cases for artillery shells and they are now running full out to make ammo for the US under GD contracts. Anyone with a defence product is rubbing there hands with glee these days. I had meetings all last weekend with these folks and they were all smiles.

I bought a case of Lake City XM193 from P&D in Edmonton a while ago and it is Mil Spec according to the AR125 Ammo Oracle, the quote is below.

Q. Holy earache Batman! This Q3131A/Lake City XM193 is really loud and it launches a FIREBALL from my muzzle! Everyone at the range is looking at me now. What gives?
Yep.

Q3131A and XM193 are Mil-Spec M193. They mean business. They are loaded hotter than most commercial loads and you're likely to notice that as soon as you fire them--especially out of a 16" post-ban barrel without a flash hider, you are going to get quite a bit of blast and a fireball. Some M193 may have flash retardant, but it's just no match for a short barrel without a hider. Prepare yourself for surgery on your ears if you have one of those short barrels and a muzzle brake. Always wear eye and ear protection when shooting!

Sorry CanAm, I can't remember, it was one of those things where it was there so I bought it along with a few other items. I also have a can of Swiss GP90 with about 950 rounds in it still.:D

Quite right  Would you believe that DND pays about $1.00/round!!! for 5.56 ammo

Also, 5.56 NATO is in short supply these days what with training requirements for Afghanistan for the Canucks and Iraq for the Yanks. So... no out of date lots available to surplus to the civvy market. Besides, DND, never puts any surplus on the civvy market in any case :(
