Hello Fellow CGN'ers

I am sure someone has looked into this and has far more info than I have yet so I thought I would post this as general question. I am going to the USA in June and while there was thinking about purchasing a Handgun and was curious if there is any advantage to doing so. Is it cost effective or does that tax, registration process take away savings or event cost more by time it is all done? For that matter is it even possible for a canadian citizen to do so, not being a distributor, etc..etc.

Any info I would appreciate.

Phone the ATF, as they control the exporting of firearms from the USA, if you want legal answers.

After the phonecall you will then stop thinking about the advantages and probably wish you had called from a payphone with an accent.

The Canadian Government has regulations permitting you to import the firearm, but the ATF restricts exporting to a degree of absolutely not.

Short answer. You legally cannot.

Call one of the sponsers who specializes in such things and they will hook you up.

The ATF DO NOT control the export of firearms out of the US. They control the purchase and transfer of firearms within the US.

The US Dept of Commerce controls the export of sporting shotguns and their parts and the US Dept of State controls the export of all other firearms and their parts.

You will likely be unable to actually take possession of any firearm while you're in the US. You might be able to arrange to purchase one when you are there and have it shipped to a dealer who is licensed to export it out of the US. You'll pay for this service. You CANNOT bring it back into Canada yourself.

Presuming you are a Canadian citizen, you CANNOT get the required registration with DOS/DOC to export any firearm, firearm part, ammunition or ammunition component yourself. All such exportations out of the US must be completed by someone or a company who is legally registered to do so with the US government.

Do a search here for "US Export" or similar. People have used companies like IRunGuns and they have saved some money in the process. Your mileage may vary.

Best of luck.

Ha... ok you call the ATF and tell them they DO NOT control the export of firearms from the U.S. Last I checked you had to travel through the U.S. to get to Canada.

It is easy to google your way around the legalities of Canadians purchasing and exporting firearms from the U.S. The legal sellers have to have an ATF qualification (not sure what term they use) in order to sell the firearm to the Canadian.

It was a short answer to a general question. The exporting you are talking about would be after the ATF had control of the situation. The majority of people making a trip like this are not getting that far.

IRUNGUNS is the best answer I agree fellas

FFL's (Federal Firearms License) refers to the license the business has to sell (handle etc) firearms.

A FFL may not sell a firearm to a non-resident alien. To buy a handgun (or any other firearm {non C&R}) you need to fill out a 4473, and have a NICS check (and some states have other requirements). The 4473 will be denied if you are not a US Cit or US Permanent Resident.

Both ATF and DoS control the export of firearms. DoS control the export paperwork, and the ATF issues another form (paperwork makes the world go around).

In short it is impossible - or at very least illegal to go buy one and export yourself.

Plus if you ever want to go to the states again, breaking Federal law down there usually gets you excluded from future visits... plus Dept of Homeland Security would have issues with a non-American toting a pistol around because if you're not one of them, you're against them...

I purchased a handgun from Buffalo Gun Centre. They did the American paperwork. I did the Canadian paperwork (with an info package from Buffalo Gun Centre). I met them at the store and followed to border. Picked up gun and paid duty. Put lock on and traveled home. Perfect.

Prophet River also does do importation for you of individual guns on your behalf.

They've been doing that for many years AFAIK.

Some 1700 + post ago, Iwas consumed with bringing change to the US export laws. I learned then that it is the US Department of State under the directorate of defense trade controls that is responsible for controlling arms exports. Here is the link to their website which contains a lot of eye glossing information. https://www.pmddtc.state.gov/

It's not hard at all......... it is however totally illegal, and if caught you will get to spend some quality "up close and personal" time with folks whose background is very different from yours. What a great learning experience that would be.

It is easy to bring in a gun from the US. Contact gunbroker.com and set up an account. Bid on your desired piece from an FFL dealer, or "buy it now". Have the FFL dealer send the gun to IRUNGUNS LLC. Let them do the paperwork for you and in about six weeks you'll have your dream gun. It is a super easy process, having gone through it myself. It may save you a bunch of money as well, depending what you are looking for. You'll never regret it once you try out the process this way. You won't feel like a hostage anymore with a boot on your throat just for being a resident of Canada. It is very liberating to get what you want when you want it. If you want that Dan Wesson Guardian (for example) - go and get it!
