Hi,

I am looking for some help, I'm modifying a .22 stock to better fit my kids. I wish to cut off a section of the rear stock but need assistance, I don't know what to mearsure on my kids to ensure I don't cut off too much or to little of the stock. I've heard that it was a certain mearsurement of the arm?? Can I get some feed back from anyone that may know.

Second question I have is I would like to trim my stock off with a thin blade and make it re-attachable at any time. I'm hoping some of you have done this before and have some tips to do this. I'm looking at a means of rigging up something from the hardware store to create this working modification.

The type of firearm I'm modifying is a cheap Mossberg semi .22. I don't really want to spend any amount of money on it, just want to make a simple mod.

Thanks,

Jake

The proper measurement is one where you can hold the grip with finger on the triger, and have the buttplate sit in the crook of your arm when your arm is bent 90 degrees. As far as how to do it: You will never be able to attach it back together without sanding, as you will lose the kerf. This will creat a "step" when/if you put it back together. If this doesn't bother you, when the time comes just apply a small amount of glue, center the pieces back up and once the glue sets countersink a couple of wood screws through the cut-off and into the stock. I just tape the buttstock where I want to cut, and chop it off with a 12" miter saw soinning a 100 tooth finishing blade. You will need to shim the stock on the table to ensure a solid 90 degree cut though. Measure 5 times, cut once. :)

Before you cut it off drill a couple of holes from the butt end in far enuff so that if you ever decide to put it back together you can use dowels and you should be able to get it back close to were it was before and the dowels will give it some strength too.

There's really no stock that is one-size-fits-all. If one kid is bigger or smaller than the rest, the stock won't fit properly. However, you can try cutting the stock in a mitre box(or a mitre saw) and buying a slip on recoil pad for the bigger kid.

Thanks guys,

Good ideas, I will definiately prep for dowels. I'm going to cut a stencile and have a 3mm rubber washer to replace whatever I lose from the blade width after cutting.

My girls are both the same size, I guess what I need to know is is there are simple mearsurment on their arm I can make the will give me a guide. I've heard a "wives tale" that the distance from the hollow shoulder to the elbow is the length however I don't have a clue how accurate this is??? Does anyone know for sure??

Any gunsmiths know what to measure to create a custom stock for a client?

Thanks again,

Jake

The arm measurement will tell you if their forearm is long enough to reach the trigger. However no one shoots with the buttstock in that arm position. It has absolutely nothing to do with proper fitting of a stock as it overlooks shoulder width, neck length, total arm length, and probably a few more facets of fitting a stock. Unless you have access to a proper try stock you are faced with a cut and try process, or your best guess for a one time cut.
Girls are a particular problem as they generally stand too square when mounting a rifle and don't get their faces or their supporting hand forward far enough from that stance. Before you do any cutting make sure they are standing correctly to mount the rifle properly. You might consider cutting it to match the thickness of available recoil pads as you can later fit a pad to increase the length. Pads are available in thicknesses from about 3/8" to 1&1/4" which gives you a fair bit of leeway.
