how do I get started in tactical shooting sports?

I think I'm getting a little bored with shooting paper from a bench at the range. I'd really like to do some action based stuff, as Youtube makes it look like a ton of fun.

However, I have no idea how to get started or what options are really available (lower mainland, BC). I'd prefer to do stuff that's more tactical rifle based, as that's what I'm into, but I'm pretty much up for anything to get me started. Have rifles, pistols, shotguns, and can pull off a pretty badass pose in front of the mirror, I'm ready to go!

Would love to hear any suggestions, thanks!

If you are lucky like I was, you'll have a local club host an "intro to multi-gun" course and it will be put on by some awesome guys that do it for the love of the game.

And btw, as much fun as YouTube makes it look, it is 10X better!

Canuck44 is the canada AC for IDPA, he can hook you up with some IDPA clubs near vancouver.

In all likelihood, pistol sports are going to be more prevalent where you are. Action rifle, multigun, action shotgun are a little harder to come by.

I've heard of them... They're like IPSC but with some camping mixed in, right? :D

we shoot steel challenge every tuesday at abbotsford fish and game, always lots of new people showing up and good way to get the speed, holster use and stress of a timer without having to run around and worry about tripping/hitting your gun on something/gun falling out of holster while doing said running

the_Klenzer,
I joined IDPA (Fraser Valley Tactical Shooters is the local club name) recently and have participated in 4 of the last 5 club matches at the Chilliwack Fish and Game club. I know it is a bit of a commute, but there are many members from the Vancouver area that I'm sure you could catch a ride with. I drive from Abbotsford. You will be impressed by how welcoming they are to newbies and folks just wanting to give it a try.
PM me and we can chat further. You can also check out the new web site http://fvts-idpa.com/ read the info or call Ken or Kim under the contact link.

Proper 3 gun only seems to show up once or twice a year here in the Lower Mainland. I believe that the recent ones were held at PoCo and Thompson Mountain. Not sure since I only heard about them in passing.

The Chilliwack group has hosted a couple of AR shoots but I believe that it was basically a stand and deliver sort of deal. No "tactical running around".

For IPSC and IDPA there's a few options. The PoCo club and Thompson Mountain are big into IPSC and host multiple matches per year. The Abbotsford club is getting into it or has already held a couple of matches. Not sure on that count. Slavex or HIAL can confirm this?

IDPA is out in Chilliwack as mentioned. No one else is hosting such events. But as you see we've got members from all over the lower mainland that make the drive.

Speed Steel is pretty big too with Mission and Abbotsford holding events. The MIssion one is pretty low key but the Abbotsford club recently got the proper Steel Challenge setup and will be part of the nation wide US series at least for scoring.

The first thing to do is make the effort to come out to some of the events and spend the day soaking it in. By all means bring your suitable guns as likely during a break someone will do what they can to run you through a stage to get a feel for what is going on. Or in the case of Speed Steel simply bring your guns, LOTS of ammo and enter yourself. The Abby practice nights are a perfect chance to try it out.

Once you see the events you'll get a feel for which you like the most. At that point you can begin getting set up for the equipment. Namely the proper "legal" holsters and mag pouches that are suitable to each style.

Part of your equipment for ANY of these events should be a set of leather work gloves. All those fun to shoot stages do not set themselves up. The groups all rely on lots of volunteer labour to set up and tear down. So plan on any of these things being a full day from early to dinner.

Speaking of which the proper full on 3 gun events would be held more often but the issue is folks to organize and run such events. As I understand it the previous events were organized by the same folks that organize a lot of the other IPSC or Steel events. Basically they simply run out of fuel at some point and the 3 gun was the event which suffered. But none of the clubs would turn down someone new that wanted to jump in and get the ball rolling in such things. If you truly enjoy the idea of a regular 3 gun event perhaps step up to the plate and become the Grand Pooba for orgainizing such a thing. The others that have done it before will be sure to offer hints and help for the first time or two. What they lack is the time and energy after doing all the other IPSC or whatever events that THEY run.

The July Poco Club match will have a 6th optional multi gun stage (rifle and pistol). It will be exactly the same stage as the 1st IPSC stage except it will have about 10 clays for the rifle.

Come out and shoot your AR type tactical rifles out to 500m at the BCRA service rifle matches. You can shoot service pistol and Tactical rifle(sniper) through them too.

just get your PAL and buy a gun and gear and show up at a match and we'll train you on the spot and then after a couple of matches and still not knowing what you're doing, you can start planning your own matches :p:D:eek::p;):stirthepot2:
Sorry, couldn't resist...
I'm sure they'll be some good advise on here...
