Hey guys, how do I know when my recoil springs are due to be replaced? In some of my pistols I have no clue of shot count so is there any indication in performance or anything like that that would tell me that they are due?

What spring would I put in a Colt 1911A1?

just by luck the only spring i've hever had to replace was on a 1911- was getting a lot of stovepipes and the slide wasn't locking up tight- needed an extra push on the back of the slide to get it to close- now as long as it's not a tricked out comp gun or something, probably an 18 pound spring will do ,

One CGN member suggested that if your casings were being ejected 6 feet or more away, then the recoil spring was probably too weak. I guess if you put too strong a spring in and were shooting very light loads, the action may not cycle properly, but I doubt this would happen. When in doubt, replace the spring, since it's cheap and easy to do.

Once they start looking kinked or warped they need to be changed for sure. They should be relatively straight. A good rule of thumb is every 5,000 rds.

I am asking because I noticed that my slide is noticeably slower closing in between rounds, I can actually feel it slide closed. Could this mean my spring is done?

i'd say yes- it's such a minor thing i'd do it anyway- it should "snap" into battery smartly- again, i'd go wolff
