Question about cleaning AR-15's.

I finally got my AR 15 SP1 yesterday. I traded for it in October or November. It has been fired and has lots of carbon in the locking lugs of the barrel.

MY Question is, what do I use as a good solvent to remove the carbon? I was thinking of removing the upper and soaking cleaning patches with solvent and putting them into the chamber. There are certain solvents that are not reccomended for AR-15's, what are they?

I have the chamber brush and other cleaning items that came with the Colt. I also have the Colt bipod, bayonet and other early Colt items to go with it.

Albayo, if you're not in a hurry, slop some CLP in there and let it sit for a few days, it'll soften up the carbon for easy removal without a lot of brushing. You can do it immidiately with CLP as well, just a bit more effort.

Also, if you don't have a chamber brush for the AR, they're worth owning.

simple green or deb or orange heavy duty handsoap and hot water peels carbon right outta there but remember it dries the metal out so put clp in there after words

I spray a bunch of Ballistol on affected areas and let it sit for a couple days... wipes off effortlessly afterwards.

Get a chamber and locking lug brass brush. This is the tool to scrub with CLP in the locking lug area.
Sinclair International (www.sinclairintl.com) make a receiver brush to clean the bolt channel. Check their other AR tools, they are unique and they do ship in Canada.
