I've heard that some of the Plainfield's are milspec, and some are not. I have one and I would like to know. I'm new to milsurp, and info would be appreciated.
The Kuhnhausen shop manual on the M1 Carbine (the technical bible) states that there are really no commercial carbines made to MILSPEC. He states that Springfield Armory Inc commercial Carbines do come closest to MILSPEC. Having said that, most seem to work fine OK and many do incorporate GI parts or are compatible with GI parts.
I slipped a milsurp trigger housing and bolt into mine 30 years ago and there were no issues whatsoever. Headspace was bang on and everything functions flawlessly.
The carbines made by the Plainfield Machine Co. can use any issue parts. Plainfields are not milsurp though. Strictly commercial.

Round bolt, M-2 slide, etc. were because Plainfield was also making M-2 carbines. Some of their M-1s used a diecast aluminum trigger housing.
It was the later Universals that departed significantly from issue pattern design.
