i stripped the old blueing off an old crosman 150 air pistol using no name brand CLR and used some blueing from canadian tire. i made sure the metal was clean and then i heated it with a torch for a few seconds. my grandfather who has no experience with guns told me this so i figured what the hell since he knows his stuff. something about it would make the finish better. no idea where he got this from.

so i followed the directions after that and put on 2 coats. i was very impressed with the finish until i took it outside and it didnt look dark enough. 2 more coats of the blueing and it was getting darker but at that rate i was going to have to put on 5 more coats

my dad started asking what i was doing after the 2nd coat. after the 4th he hands me a tube of birchwood casey blueing paste with a smile on his face. one coat and its dark how i want it.

this stuff is awesome. just spread it on the metal, let it sit for 1 minute and wipe it off with a rag. no rinsing at all.

ill post a pic tommorow ;)

I used Birchwood Casey paste to touch up on my barrel that came in contact with acid. It worked great for a few months and I added another coat on to make it a darker blue. Since the two coats over the last 18 months. The blue stays on.

I may need to do another coat in a year or two.

Oil and sit

Once you have done the blueing job and it looks good, just oil it well and let it sit for a few days.
I don't know exactly why but blueing jobs get better when they are left alone for a few days under a good coat of oil.
Maybe there's a slower secondary reaction between base metal and the upper blued metal layer that keeps going on under the oil protective layer.

it does look better now after its been oiled and sitting for a couple days. but, when i was stripping with CLR i splashed some on the barrel while i was doing the rest of the gun. i totally stripped the barrel but now i can see where that splash was even though i stripped and blued the whole thing the same.

i guess nothing ever turns out perfect for me :(
