As the title says, I'm trying to figure out how to carry my shotgun when backpacking to get the best comfort and speed of access.
Thanks!

i use a sling. with a thumb hole built in. and a speed adjustment. works pretty good on the turkey hunts

Slid down the side of the backpack with the butt sticking out the top. Easy access and it's not flopping around.

Loaded.......the rest looks after itself.

and not pointed at the person walking infront or behind you i will presume :D

check out the vtac 2 point sling video on youtube.com

it's always nice to carry your weapon of choice infront of you and also to be able to take it off to navigate the odd windfall or obsticle... i prefer the balance of a rifle on my chest with a loaded pack on my back to strapping it all behind me... and when you need it, it's right there.

I am right handed so I carry my rifle nose down with the sling on my left shoulder. Very fast to bring on line ready to fire on the right side.

i use a back holster (basically a pouch with shoulder straps) that i recieved from the forest service years ago...its a nice little set up

takes lesss than a second to whip it outa my pouch.......lol sounds kinds funny but you know what i mean. plus its nice to have your hands free while backpacking.

Well I don't have Kangaroo in my gene pool... So I just carry my shotgun by my side. :)

I used a single point sling for a while. A nice bungee type one from S&J.

But I switched to a comfy standard two point sling.

I carry it on my right shoulder, muzzle down.

Its just a shrug to get it into play this way and rain wont pour down the big 12 ga bore and watter log the one in the chamber.

I don't need to access my gun for snap shots, if you are reasonably flexible you can get your gun pretty fast, like 2-3 seconds (easily).

I like mine (I now have 2 of them), they are pretty good to deal with.

Not for everyone, but it is exactly what I wanted.

Just curious, why do you need a shotty while backpacking? Bear country?

IF YOU GO DOWN IN THE WOODS TODAY, YOU BETTER NOT GO ALONE.....
Havent you heard the song? I ALWAYS carry a shotgun while hiking in the bush. Havent ever needed it yet, but if i do need it, i am glad it is with me.
P.S. I always carry my shotgun in my hands, for those quick cougars. Not gonna do any good in a backpack. So its in the hand ready to rock!

Where I hike, there is a large population of both black and grizzlies. It's not a huge fear for me, but you can never predict a bear. I don't care what anyone says, bears are not always more afraid of you.
Like the saying goes, Rather have the gun and not need it, then not have the gun and need it.

+1 for Eberlestock. Got one last year, it's served me well, rifle or shotgun = easy access. The pack is nice too :)

Right handed. Slung behind right shoulder, muzzle up. Electrical tape over muzzle for rain/dirt. My wilderness gun has a 12.5" barrel, which leaves the butt of the stock down comfortably at the level of my right palm. Gripping it loosely there prevents it from swinging around and allows a quick unsling to prepare for a shot if necessary.
