I have used ground corn cob media , with and without polish, crushed walnut shell with and without polish and I am presently using a 50/50 mixture of white rice and brown rice with no polish. It works quite well and there isn't as much dust as with the other medias. Buy it at the bulk section at your super market, it is pretty cheap , and no, UNCLE BEN'S won't work. The shine you get is in relation to the condition of the brass you start with. Range pickups that are kind of mottled will polish up kind of mottled shiny. Nice new brass will come out nice and shiny, as will old brass that is just darkened but still brass in color but maybe it will take a little longer to be finished. Depending on if it is a vibratory polisher or a tumbler, anywhere from 2 to 4 hours is usually plenty of time . Sometimes the polishing can be quickened by taking a little steel wool to the necks of rifle cases to remove the carbon before polishing.
