How do you deal with the gas?

I was shooting a buddy's silenced Sig 551 yesterday, and the gas was so thick that my glasses started to fog up and my eyes were stinging. Is this just something that you have to deal with, or are there some adjustments that you can do?

Is the silencer needing to be replaced? It's a custom screw-on build since the flash hider is integrated into the barrel.

I asked him about it, but he just shrugged it off. Am I just a pussy, and in need of following my own advice to cowboy the #### up and stop being a ######? Or is there an issue that can be remedied?
 
I have no idea about the problem (I suspect the silencer is leaking and blowing gas back).

I am 100% sure Sig designers didn't incorporate a 'shooter-eye-sting' feature after use.

I wouldn't shoot it anymore until the problem was resolved.

Tell your friend to scrap that piece of Swiss garbage and get a real Rifle :p an AR 15 w/PRI gas buster charging handle no problems at all
 
I always wear shooting glasses, so I guess it could have been alot worse.

I have shot suppressed firearms before, but not sigs, and I just had the feeling that this one was a bit excessive. It got to the point that I couldnt see the targets because my eyes were too watery, and my oakleys fogged up. I only experienced this while prone - kneeling and standing were manageable.

Yeah, I hate that problem. That and the smoke my rpg-7 leaves behind, oh, and way your morter tube burns your hand after 30-40 rounds when you touch it. yeah that sucks. And when my ears pop when my submarine goes below 150 meters... I wish I had problems like yours.:)

Regarding tube burns - i didnt think to watch where I set the rifle after I blew threw 90 rounds in 3 30 round mags within the space of 2 minutes, and the silencer melted a shooting mat. It took 20 minutes to scrape all the goo off:redface::wave:
 
Might want to adjust the gas settings on the Sig. I saw a POF piston rifle beat itself almost to death when it was run with a can while on the wrong gas setting.
Wear goggles.

Is this really a "silencer", or just an add-on product called a 'silencer".

I thought devices used to reduce the sound were prohibited?

Canuckchap check out his location. Some countries allow these evil baby killing silent messengers of death as a means of reducing noise pollution. Oh the horror...
 
"Silencers" or other devices that reduce the sound of a shot ARE prohibited......IN Canada, for civilians. Lots of other countries allow them, because they make sense!

I don't have any experience shooting a sig rifle with a suppressor on it, but it is perfectly normal for an AR15 with a suppressor attached to spit a TONNE of gas back in your face. I personally don't notice a difference with or without the PRI gasbuster handle either. Either way, it's still bad. And even with eye protection, the gas gets in your eyes. After a few mags, you can expect your eye pro to be covered in splatters of black oil & carbon

Next time you melt a shooting mat to your gun, just keep shooting it, the rubber will burn off eventually :p
