How do you define a 'precision rifle' ?

They are so good, many goods scopes out there but those S&B for me are the epitome of precision and clarity... even thinking of ordering one for My Icon, the rifle deserve such good glass but at 3K for a deer rifle... I have to be calm here... JP.
 
the 100 yard standard does not apply to many rifles such as a palma, silhouette center fire rifles, 1,000 yard bench rifles, etc.
i am not sure how far the sniper rifles are shot at , or the tactical type rifles, but I would wager not too many are shot at 100 yards.

A rim fire match rifle would be the exception, as would a short range bench rifle.

The standard of accuracy groups do not mean a lot either, as the Palma Match and target rifle matches is shoot far more than 3 or five shots.
I woulds think that a precision rifle should be defined as what it is intended for, not how accurate the rifle accuracy is.

to me a precision rifle is a custom rifle it can be a factory action rem,savage etc or a custom action with a custom barrel good trigger ,stock and scope,not sps's steevens 200 and weatherby vanguards etc like we see on here most of the time .

I think if someone wants to talk about the accuracy of factory rifles they should post in the reloading forum imo.

There are lots of factory precision rifles on the market , built by the factories for match shooting.
A custom is not needed.

Cat I realize some factory rifles are precision rigs I was just talking about the rest that we see pop up here .
To me not all varmint weight factory rifles are precision rifles that is just my opinion.

I may have misunderstood your post, you will certainly see no argument form me when it comes to varmint rigs!:)
They are, afterall, used in varmint competitions!:D

We are now talking about defenitions and it all comes down to samantics really. You say po-ta-toe, I say po-tat-oe. My idea of precision is a rifle that can consistently deliver 0.25 MOA at any distance the cartridge and rifle setup is suitable for. So far I have not acheived that with my rifle, my best group is 0.256 MOA but my average is closer to 0.4 MOA, and that is with what I would consider a semi-custom rig as it is not available from a factory, but it is assembled from readily available parts.

Now shut up and lets shoot!:D

I consider a precision rifle one that is capable - in the hands of a precision shooter - of delivering the accuracy required for the distance, number of rounds and the size of the target.

Some consider a $350 with a scope and a bipod to be precision, but it will not win a BR match.

The custom 308's and 223's with iron sights used by TR shooters are plenty "precision" but have a hard time competing with an F-Open gun...

It is all relative, but the definitions definitely get blurred on this forum....
