How do you finish Stainless?

I have a Tikka T3 but the only thing that bugs me is the stainless bolt. How I know that Tikka T3 tactical rifles come with the bolt black so it must be able to be done. I would like to avoid powder coating but that is what the local gunsmith sais I must do. Is there any spray on or bake on finishes that would work?

I've coated stainless using gun kote. The only issue being, anywhere there is zero tolerance the finish will rub off. IE the locking lugs.
Here is a bolt we finished in flat black.

The receiver on this shotgun is stainless refinished in antique brass.

Stainless can also be "chemically blackened" The same basic process as blueing chrome moly. Same durability, but no changes in dimensions due to not coating the metal. It is a chemical reaction.

Bead Blast and card with steel wool and oil.
Rich
