I realize that there are many factors that dictate our hunting style, geography, private or public land, hunter numbers, deer density, etc.
But I am curious as to what most of the hunters here find the most successful method of hunting deer.
We use a combination of Stand/Still Hunting that works well in the mixed bush/agriculture/swamp areas of Southern Ontario where we hunt.
The area is a shotgun only, no dogs area which also influences our methods... although many hunters drive deer in our area. I have found that driving deer is unproductive compared to a well positioned stand or blind and a lot of patience.
Whats your preference?
You can choose more than one option....

So far I've spent a ton of hours in my stand. I've passed up a total of 7 good sized deer so far the biggest being a 5x4. I think that right now, in my zone, I'm the only one stand hunting with my bow. I hear loads of gun shots all day long. Yesturday I was in my stand from sun up to sundown, there is a samll heard if elk in a second rut, mewing and bugleing all damn day, I think they must have pushed the deer out, all I saw was a 3x1, 3 nice point on one side with a funny looking beam shooting straight up on the other.

This year I used the good old stand hunting wait till the final day of the season to see the biggest buck of my life before choking horribly and missing at 50 or 60 meters method.

I like this new format, there were 2 options that apply to me, so I tried to check them both, and it worked. My main methods are stand hunting (hiding myself somewhere on the ground in a cutblock, or the tree edge of a cutline) and spot & stalk. Dogs are illegal here in Alta for big game.

Never had any luck pushing bush here, as there is just too much bush to push where I hunt. And I don't have the discipline for still hunting, I always walk way too fast.

Its funny when I was younger I could not sit still for ten minutes.... and I would end up still hunting and pushing the deer to the other fellas in their stands. I would sometimes end up getting a shot and even got a couple of wall hangers while still hunting.
Now I can sit for hours... read a little... watch the birds... must be gettin old.
But I manage to get a couple every year... patience has its rewards.;)

I like stand hunting, let them come to you...

that can be the most productive, but the most fun by far is spot and stalk

How many of us have stands that produce deer every year???
There are some spots where we hunt that are virtually guaranteed to get you shooting... it is not hard to have patience if you are confident.;)

We usually hunt a combination of open prairie and grain fields, so the most productive method is to spot and stalk.
See now that is what I been waiting for.... I think that spot and stalk would be as exciting as hunting with hounds.... except it's all visual instead of auditory.... very cool.
I dream of hunting in the priaries and the mountains... very physical and lots of moving around.

I've done both, but always taken deer when I was sitting still, either in a ground blind, or up in a treestand.

I've found walking to get the area, see the patterns of movement, and then setting up along a likely path either morning or evening has worked for me.

Out here in the Okanagan I like to spot and stalk or still hunt.Very few people drive or use the tree stand. When looking for Mulies they like the open fields and the Whitetails can be found all over the place. They are unpredictable.

well None of the above, I use a quad and move slowly along the cutlines and trails looking for moose or deer (usually about 10 km/h) When I see a deer or moose I will dismount and stalk till I'm in a good firing position, then Boom, meat for the freezer

Just got back from my stand ...only saw 10 deer... only one buck, a tall antlered 8-point .
Have done all of the types of hunting in the above poll...much prefer to sit back(in comfort) and wait for them...better to pick and choose .....still waiting....

You passed on an antlered deer.... you definitely have more patience than me keepa... I hope you are rewarded with a better one!

I am lucky, I see bucks every time I go to my stand. They feed and walk right below me, I use a homemade 2x4 ladder stand with a platform to sit on, the bottom of the stand has been rubbed by deer, there is spots rubbed right down to the bare wood. I put on 2 thick coats of patio paint for camo and weather protection, I also have small scapes as close as 3 feet from the bottom. I put this up in the spring for the elk hunt and left it there, they must be used to it.
