How do you protect your scope?

Hey all, recently purchased a leupold vx1 2-7x33 for about 215+tx.. I asked for the protective glass and flip cover, was 120$ for both ends plus tx (leupold brand).....wow crazy. Just curious what you guys use if anything? They had generic at about 30$ for both...

They also had just the flip cover... No glass.. Any thoughts?
 
Those flip covers are made for anything from the lower end Leupold glass (like you and I have), to the top of the line fancy stuff. On my 2-7 there is the Butler Creek see through flip ups which do an awesome job. On 2 other scopes I have the Alumina covers and they work great as well as finish off the rifle package for me. One last Leupold has the Raincote kit on it, which i'm not as fond of as the Aluminas...
Summary: They look cool, keep the rain off the glass until it's time to shoot but are expensive.
 
Londero in St-Jean has an assortment of Butler Creeks. Bring your scope so that you can try them in the store.
 
For me - Butler Creek all the way. I want something that I'm not afraid to use in the bush because of the price. The Leupold covers are nice if its a show gun you bring to the range, or you have a lot of cash to sling around ... but I would rather spend the extra on a good scope or better ammo.

I totally agree.. 120$ is more than half what I spent on the scope..butler creek seems like the way to go.
 
I use the Butler Creek Blizzards, too. The little chart that is on the package is handy to keep for your next scope but taking the scope to the shop is more sure. Wholesale Sports here had a run of size eights labelled as size seven for over a year which was very inconvenient because I needed a seven and they wouldn't do anything about it.
 
Okay - I have used them in the past and for the price, you can afford to buy a set every year. But I've had them break mid season - hinge issues - right in the middle of a hunt. I spent the 2nd half toting my rifle at port with a hand over the objective. So, if I'm in a stalking situation, chances are the scope is uncovered. If I'm not, then a rubber bikini does the job just fine. I don't buy Butlers any more, but if I did, I would still keep a bikini in the pack along with a lens cleaner of some type.
