OK, so I picked up my little(?) .22 derringer, safely transfered it home in a locked case etc. but how do you lock a birds head handled, spur trigger firearm?
Regular trigger lock won't work.
Cables are too long.
.22 bore is too small to accept any of the cable locks I have.
Any ideas?

Thats a good question. Mine is a Moores 41rf derringer so I just put a cable lock through the barrel. What type of derringer is it?

You may be able to find a padlock with a plastic coated shaft (to prevent damage) that you could lock around the opened action. Or, you could do a couple of wraps with a cable lock around the pivot of the opened action...

I don't know what your gun looks like but I have put a small (luggage type) padlock on the hammer so it can not hit the firing pin. I did this on an antique "suicide special" handgun with a spur trigger.

A German RECK copy of a Remington two shot in .22 cal, hence cables are too large to go thru the barrel.
Tapedeck 74: All the cable locks I've seen are too long or not flexible enough to secure the little reptile, with the action open.
Rudy H: yours sounds like the best solution, a smaller bicycle padlock thru the frame, near the frame to barrels pivot screw, with the action open and the barrels tilted as for loading.
Thanks for all the ideas fellows, what's left of my mind was sort of blank on a solution. :slap:

Westicle and Strangeday, thanks guys, but the cables on any of the locks I have or have seen have too large an attachment, (that fita into the lock itself) to go through the .22 barrels. If you know of one that will fit, please give me a holler.
I tried a luggage cable lock. The wire was thin enough but the fitting that goes into the locking mechanism itself was too large.

I recently bought a couple feet of steel wire cable at Home Depot that was 1/8" diam. That should do the trick. It's not plastic coated however. If you want something "specially" for that gun, try a length of that and buy a small bottle of Plasti-dip or "tool dip" (stuff to re handle pliars and such). They come in many colours and you should be able to put something unique and more importantly cheap that'll be perfect.

Hope that helps..

-edit-
actually thinking about it, you'd need to put a lead bite on one end to create your "loop", that may be too large to fit through the barrel... If you don't plan on shooting the gun a lot, make the length 2-3 times longer than you need, crimp both ends and when you want to take her out, cut an end off and recrimp when you're done. A box of 1/8 bites are a couple dollars, and go on real easy.

Buy a MTM plastic gun box. they have a provision for putting a padlock on them
That should keep little hands from accessing it. A thief would not be deterred by any gun lock.

I am assuming that the lockable case you brought it home in is used for other guns.
