My Firesights arrived today. Rear sight was no problem to install, but for the life of me I can not get the front windage drum out. I've removed the front post and tryed using a hammer and a punch as per the instructions on surplusrifle.com but the thing won't budge. Any suggestions, or do I just need a bigger hammer. Thanks, ZM

You can use a screw type C-clamp to push it out. You need something that will fit over the windage drum on the side you're pushing to, so that it will push out, and something to use under the other side, to push it through.

Kind of a bubba rig, but it will work if you find the right pieces in your junk box.

Personally, I'd just use a brass punch and hammer on my SKS. Make sure you support the front end of the barrel properly, and that should work too.

Got it out. Thanks for the suggestion stevo. I supported the one side of the barrel with a piece of MDF in my vice and used a short brass bolt against the other side to push it out. Took quite a bit of torque to get it moving but worked well and no damage to the rifle.

Excellent, glad to hear you got it out. If you want it , I can pass on my welfare sight elevation tool design, also.;)

I believe the height of the front sight post is approx to the height of a full grown man at 200 yards. I could be wrong, but I remember hearing something about this a while back.

Darn now I will just have to goto the range yet again...sigh, and check it out with my buddy. :D

Calum,

I thought it is an interesting subject on its own and thus posted a new thread - "SKS Iron Sights as a rangefinder". You might want to take a look.
