How do you take a k98k rear sight body off?

Hey Guys, im trying to figure out how to take a k98k rear sight body off of the barrel?

I getting a new one so it could hold the hand guard in.

They are soldered in place. You will have to apply some heat. Doesn't take a lot, so be careful when you do it so you don't ruin the finish.

A heat gun would work, or a hair dryer.

A hair dryer that would melt the solder on a Mauser rear sight base housing would set someone's hair on fire. Perhaps this is the explanation to when we get certain answers to some of these posts that we wonder if the person who makes that Post has fried his brains.

A propane torch will do the job nicely. Keep it moving around the barrel so that the housing gets heated evenly. You are probably going to have to apply a bit more time and heat to the top of the base where the sights mount as it is thicker and will take more time to heat up. The idea is to melt the solder and expand the base slightly, not get everything a bright orange colour.

Be aware that on a lot of Mausers there is a small screw usually at the rear of the sight base, that must be removed as it screws into the barrel slightly.
