How does an SVT-40 scope mount attach to the rifle?

I've got a pretty dumb question about the sniper version of the SVT-40.

As I understand it, late war models were designed with an intergral mounting system that the earlier production rifles were without.

Which part of the rifle has the integral mount? Is it milled into the receiver or the receiver cover?
If it's only the receiver cover than it would be possible to seap a late one onto an early rifle and therefore allow for the proper mount and scope to be attached to such a rifle. But if it's actually a manufacturing change in the receiver design, than early war models are SOL for attaching a proper mount.

Can someone with a scope mounted SVT let me know how it attaches? And possible provide pics istinguishing between the early and late parts.

There aren't any late war models, all SVT's were manufactured with rail mounts machined into the receiver untill late 41 early 42 when the SVT was abandonned as a sniper's rifle. The mount was quite flimsy and would not stay zeroed, the mount was the same on all the snipers and it was held in place by a notch at the rear of the receiver. Three types of notches were tried a small one (could not take the scope for cleaning), a large one (mount was to loose) and back to a small one again (could not take the mount off again and would not stay zeroed anyway). A bad mount design killed the SVt as a sniper's rifle from day one. Most of the SVT scopes ended up on 91/30 bolt action rifles with the PU mount.
